The tobacco production
meeting for the 1962 tobacco
crop will be held this
Thursday morning,
December 10, at Edenton
Restaurant, beginning at
10:3<j> A.M. Dr. Gerald
Peedin, crop science
tobacco specialist with N. C.
State University, will be
with us to present the
program and to answer any
questions you may have. As
in the past, this should be an
interesting and informative
meeting so, if you are
producing tobacco or have
an interest in it, try to be
with us.
Getting the most out of
your production dollar is
important with tobacco and
any other crop. The basis for
all crops is a good fertility
program since a plant’s
response to fertilizer will
affect its reaction to
everything for the rest of the
season. A good soil sample
is the best way to give your
crops all they need without
putting out more than they
been mostly favorable
allowing producers in
Central Texas to nearly
complete their harvesting
activities. In Oklahoma,
harvest was well along also
except in an occasional area
that had received the ex
tremely heavy rains earlier.
A portion of the peanut crop
in those few areas would be
abandoned. Shelters were
generally not interested
currently in acquiring any
of the remaining un
committed farmers’ stock.
Quality as well as yield
was good in most areas.
Prices are cents per pound
for prompt shipment unless
otherwise stated. Spanish
type-shelled No. 1 56-57, few
high as 58; U.S. splits no
sales reported; runner-type
too few sales reported to
establish a market: un

deal of soil
sampUag is done in Chowan
County. In fact, Chowan
County has led the state in
numbers of soil samples
sent to Raleigh. This year is
the same with large num
bers of samples being left at
the Extension office and sent
to Raleigh whenever
someone is going in that
direction, usually at least
once a week.
The problem now is that
so many have been sent to
Raleigh in the last month
that they are getting backed
up and are delayed in get
ting the reports back to you.
They have said that if your
sample was sent in four
weeks ago, it should be back
anytime now. If your
samples went in recently or
will go in during the next
four to six weeks it will
probably take 5-7 weeks
before you get the report
back.
Don’t let this discourage
you from taking your soil
samples. Lime has more
time to react if applied in
the fall but if your report is
late and you don’t get it out
until spring it will still
benefit your crop for that
year. Fertility information
should be back early enough
for all crops if the samples
are sent off soon and if later
it will still be back in time
for most crops.
Call us here at the
agricultural extension office
if we can be of any help in
getting your samples taken
or sent to Raleigh (482-8431).
4-H Activities
The climax of 19814-H will
be on December 10 when the
annual 4-H Achievement
Program will be held. The
meeting will be at Center
Hill Community Building,
beginning at 7:30 P.M. The
program will feature a slide
presentation called “IOU 4-
H”, recognition of county
winners and presentation of
Ruritan trophies.
On Wednesday, December
30, a roller skating trip to
Spinning Wheels in
Elizabeth City is planned.
Notify the extension office if
you plan to go as soon as
possible so reservations can
be made.
