Page 4-B The Washington Report: Tobacco A Favorite Target By Congressman Walters. Jones Tobacco seems to con tinue to be a favorite target hare in Washington. This was true of the Carter Administration and now the Reagan Administration is firing both barrels.A current proposal involves legislation to place stronger warning labels on cigarette packages by rotating the warning labels specifically listing the health hazards alleged by the Department of Health and Human Services. This would include the risks of heart disease, cancer and emphysema, the hazards to unborn children of pregnant women who smoke, and the benefits of Quitting, no matter how long a person has smoked. This attack seems to come up about every two years, while in the meantime, the distribution of marijuana, cocaine and other dangerous drugs runs unabated, and little or nothing in the legislative field is being done to halt this insidious danger to the health of our young people. Os great interest to many people in this country was the Senate proceedings regarding the expulsion of Senator Harrison (Pete) Williams, Jr. Senator Williams had served 23 years in the Senate, but unfortunately became in volved in the ABSCAM scandal of some two years ago. In order to avoid the embarrassment of being expelled, Senator Williams offered his resignation in a late hour during the historic hearings. Williams is only the third Senator in history to be convicted of a felony and no Senator has been expelled since the Civil War. Certainly no Member of Congress takes any delight in seeing his colleagues having to go through such an ordeal as did Senator Williams ; but as unpleasant as it is, the Congress must monitor its individual Members’ conduct. As Chairman of the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries during the past fifteen months we have certainly run into some rather in teresting and for that matter, tragic hearings. Last week we conducted oil drilling units has sur vived the heavy storm whereas the larger, much more safe OCEAN RANGER collapsed and sank sometime during the midnight hours of a storm - tom night. The purpose of the hearing is not to point the finger of suspicion at anyone but hopefully to find reasons that might have caused this tragic loss of life, so as to prevent a similar happening in the future. As we develop more and more oil drilling units in an effort to find sufficient energy, then it stands to reason that the percentage of chances of loss of life and property increases. Deans List Joseph E. Sherrill, 111, of Edenton was named to the Dean’s List at Pitt Com munity College for the 1981- 82 Winter Quarter. The Dean’s List represents a grade point average of 3.50 to 4.00. Susan D. Joyner of Edenton was named to the Honor Roll at Pitt Com munity College for the 1981- 82 Winter Quarter. The grade point average represented by the Honor Roll is 3.00 to 3.50. Honor Roll Officials from Martin Community College in Willi amston announced last week that Willie L- Jenkins of Edenton was among the 57 students named to the institution’s honors lists for t)ie winter quarto-. Jenkins was among the 38 students named to the Honors List which is reserved for students compiling a 3.5 grade - point average for their respective course loads. Jenkins is enrolled in the Automotive program. investigative bearings into what caused the lost of the offshore oil drilling unit named the OCEAN RANGER which collapsed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland with the loss of lives Os all 84 of its crew members. A rather strange aspect of this hearing was when it was developed that two smaller New Adult Interest Courses College of The Albemarle has added three new sub jects among the two dozen non-credit, adult interst courses scheduled in Chowan County this spring. Although most classes started this week, Clayton Morrisette, COA director of continuing education, said registration will remain open through the second class meeting for each course. The new subjects, all taught from 7 P.M. until 10 P.M. at John A. Holmes High School, brings the total number of adult interest courses being offered in the county during the Spring Quarter to 24. Each will meet once a week for 11 weeks, ending around May 27. Included in the trio is Sign Language with Daphne Winslow as instructor. The first class met last Tuesday. Two courses will meet for the first time tonight (Thurs. Mar. 18). These are: Ac tivity Coordinator for Rest Homes, taught by Joe Ricks; and Micro - Wave Cooking with Linda Over man as the instructor. Pauline Travis, COA supervisor for Chowan County, said anyone who desires more information about the new offerings can call her at 482-8426 on Tuesday or Thursday evenings between 7 and 10 o’clock. The registration fee for each course is SB. No fee is charged persons who are 65 years of age or older. Letter To The Editor Continued From Pag* 1-B much more likely. The longer the sessions, and the more complex the business of government, the more important it is that legislators be held ac countable to the people they represent. We must continue our tradition of close com munication between citizens and their legislators. Our legislature belongs to the people, and the people’s interest should continue to be their first order of business. The best interests of the voters will not be served by a four-year term As a wise old North Carolinian once said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Tom Gilmore In Support Os Draft Registration Continued From Pag* 2-B Law Enforcement agencies of the United States Government to arrest and bring to trial those who defy the laws of the United States. We further recommend that all Federal and State benefits be denied to those who do not obey the law, including education loans, Veterans’ Benefit Loans, Unemployment benefits, social security, social services benefits, and all other tax supported benefits.” Mr. E. C. Toppin, of Edenton, North Carolina and State Commander of this 63 year old Veterans Organization, states that The Legion favors this extension of the deadline to March 31, in order the all eligible males may have one last chance to fulfill their obligation to the United States Government. Stating that “Freedom Must Be Preserved,” Toppin said that “all Americans must be willing to share in that responsibility.” CfffHfcv, DON'T BE FOOLED BY CLAIMS OF "LOWEST FOOD PRICES”!
