own weight and ultimately
had no chance of being
enacted. Those of us who
introduced the present
regulatory tall fed that this
is a modification or com
promise of the bill two years
ago and has an excellent
chance of being enacted.
Back in January I
reported to you that I was
concerned about the ter
mination of certain Coast
Guard activities, search and
rescue, participating in the
control of the importation of
illegal drugs, imposing the
200- mile fishing limit and
other things. I introduced a
supplemental appropriation
Mil in order that these vital
and essential services could
be continued. Although no
official action has been
taken, I have been assured
by the Chairman of the
Subcommittee which must
pass judgement on this
legislation, that it will be
approved carrying a figure
of $172 - million. If this
becomes a reality, that
most of the present ac
tivities of the Coast Guard
will be continued.
