Drive With Care Over Holiday CHARLOTTE - Ac cording to estimates issued March 26 the N. C. State Motor Cluty, 9 North Carolinians will lose their lives in traffic accidents over the 78 hour Easter Holiday week - end, beginning at 6:00 P.M., April 9 and ending 12:00 midnight, April 12. The prediction is 2 fatalities less than the number of people who died during the similar holiday a year ago and 14 less than 1980. The prediction follows a trend of fewer fatalities over holidays which began several years ago. John G. Frazier, 111, president of the statewide motor club says there is good basis for the optimistic figure. “The combination of less disposable income due to the recession and the relatively high costs of gasoline and travel are reducing traffic on the highways,” said Frazier. Thus far this year, 100 fewer people have died on state highways than at this time a year ago. The pessimistic factors in the prediction, according to Frazier, are spring weather NEW OWNERS : «® —A Tires during the New Owners GRAND OPENING SALE at Albemarle Tire! ★ Drawings Every Hour ★ ★ Free Giveaways ★ I \ J Register Saturday, April 3, 1982 T-Shirts Hats Balloons ! r J y 9AM til SPM Key Chains Playing Cards \ L-^| | We?re Coming AtYimWith ' wheel SIABB I MICHELIN *ygyiM ©tiMyrirv piitttti SHOCKStIgI AFFORDABLY PBICEDI ™ C*** El FPTRnMIP m .—flß ELI A P 205-75-15 92.99 2.53 WkT/ Itllirr. Come Meet Mr. Bib, The Michelin Man SECTION B which tends to cause more people to develop wan derlust and a recent dip in gasoline prices from those of a year ago. Because most holiday weekends are family af fairs, trips during these periods focus on the im portance of seat belts and infant restraint equipment. Infant fatalities are proportionately higher than adults in traffic accidents because of their inability to protect themselves upon impact. The National Highway Traffic Safety Ad ministration and the North Carolina Highway Patrol are placing particular emphasis this year on equipping each family with an approved infant restraint seat for each child in the family. “The most precious thing a family can bring back from a holiday is their healthy children,” said Frazier. “The relatively small investment in infant restraint equipment is perhaps the best investment in security a parent can make,” he concluded. CRC To Review Program The Coastal Resources Commission will review its estuarine management program and its initiatives for improving public un derstanding of coastal management issues at its meeting April 1-2 in Wilmington at the Hilton Inn. Committees of the CRC will consider draft rules for the beach access program and receive an update on the planning study of Radio Island and the Morehead City-Beaufort harbor. They will also discuss permit coordination, revision of hearing rules and permit application fees. CRC task forces will continue their discussions of coastal water quality concerns and post storm development policies. Land plans for Pasquotank County, Craven County and the Town of Mesic will be reviewed for approval. An amendment to the Ahoskie Land Use Plan will also be reviewed. The CRC will consider a variance request from the Town of Long Beach. Long Beach is asking for CRC approval to use asphalt paving on a portion of the town’s public beach access parking lot within the 60 foot ocean setback zone. Usually marl or clay is required within this area. On the afternoon of March 31, the Castal Resources Advisory Council will hold its quarterly meeting at the Hilton. Staff reports will be giver on matters of budget, legislation, enforcement and public information. There will also be presen tations on major coastal issues, including agricultural land clearing, beach access and coal. The 47-member group is created by the Coastal Area Management Act. Its members primarily represent local govern ments. W. B. Gardner of Edenton is chairman of CRAC. Thomas Edison and his staff at Menlo Park invented something new every ten days.
