Holmes Band Participates
Held annually in
' Washington, D.C., The
Cherry Blossom Festival is
THE biggest site of Spring
in the Nation. On April 3, the
John A. Holmes High School
Marching Aces Band will be
right in there with the best
of them, helping 7,000 other
band students triumphantly
climax this national
celebration during the
Parade. With a massing of
bands in a “Salute to the
President,” the parade,
embodying fully military
pagentry, is the largest
patriotic musical event ever
held in the Nation’s
capital. Otis Strother,
band director, explains the
.honor of participating in the
Festival Parade. Only two
bands from each state are
eligible to appear annually,
and applications to do so
must be made a year in
advance. Part of the ap
plication includes pictures
and a taped recording to
determine ability.
“This is a first for our 100
strong band”, Strother said,
“and naturally we’re all
excited and delighted to
have been selected for this
opportunity.” “The Parade
is so big,” he explained,
“that our unit number is
322.” Students will line up at
9:30 A.M. for the parade,
which does not begin until
1:00 P.M.
Although some band units

With Mr. and Mrs. A1

James Bembry, Mr. and
Mrs. Dick Taylor and Mr.
and Mrs. Otis Strother as
chaperones, the bands plans
to take full advantage of
that which the nation’s
capital has to offer over the
week-end. Tom Ellis, local
attorney, has made
arrangements for the
students to meet Republican
Senator Jesse Helms on
Friday. Visits to the
National Cathedral,
Arlington Cemetery, Capitol
Building, Smithsonian In
stitute, FBI and other
national monuments head
priority lists for sightseeing.
Washington’s Cherry
Blossom Festival has been a
national celebration since
1912 when Mrs. Williams
Howard Taft, wife of the
president, helped plant the
lovely trees around the
Tidal Basin in Washington’s
Potomac Park. Through the
1920 s and 19305, the
blossoming of the trees
signaled a wave of social
events in the capital area.
After World War 11, an
annual formal national
festival was planned. In 1954
the parade was added, with
emphasis on national
participation. In addition to
bands from each state, there
are princesses from each
state, one of whom will be
crowned Queen of the
Cherry Blossom Festival in
ceremonies Friday night
before the parade on
Saturday.
