Claxton Stallings Jr.
From Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Rep. Walter B. Jones,
chairman of the House
Committee on Merchant
Marine and Fisheries, has
announced postponement of
the Manteo hearing of the
possible disposal of
decommissioned nuclear
submarines in the Atlantic
Ocean. The hearing had
been scheduled for Friday.
Rep. Jones noted that the
House of Represenatives is
now scheduled to tke key
votes on the first concurrent
budget resolution last week.
“Most Members of Congress
share my view that it is
essential that we be in
Washington to cast our votes
on the budget. Everyone
originally anticipated that
the budget would have been
disposed of long before the
day of the hearing but, as
reported in the press, thus
far the House has been
unable to pass previous
budget proposals.”
The committee remains
hightly interested in in
vestigating this issue. Jones
indicated that the hearing
will be rescheduled later
this year but noted that a
specific date has not been
set.

THE CHOWAN HERALD
Stalling, Scholarship Winner
Claxton Stallings Jr.,
Route 1, Belvidere, has been
named winner of a SSOO
educational scholarship
from the N.C. 4-H
Development Fund.
Stallings, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Claxton Forest
Stallings, is one of 10 4-H
members from across North
Carolina selected to share in
$5,000 of scholarship money
being distributed this year
by the Fund.
Harold J. Brubaker of
Asheboro, president of the
fund, says the scholarships
are awarded to outstanding
4-H members for college
study during the 1982-83
academic year.
The 4-H Development
Fund, with headquarters at
North Carolina State
University at Raleigh, was
organized in 1958 by friends
and alumni of 4-H to help
support certain phases of
club work.
Brubaker explained that
this is the 21st year that
scholarships have been
awarded. Recipients, he

reported, are selected on the
basis of their high school
record, evidence of college
aptitude and 4-H work.
An active 4-H’er, Stallings
served as the Northeastern
District 4-H president for
the 1980-81 term, and has
been showing pigs in the
Albemarle Livestock Show
for nine years. He has also
shown thirteen steers in the
local show and State Fair.
Stallings plans are to
attend N.C. State University
in Raleigh and study
Agricultural Education.
He was one of two 4-H’ers
to receive this award in the
Northeastern District. One
girl and one boy is chosen
from each district in North
Carolina. Anna Rae
Goodwin, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Wallace Goodwin
of Chowan County was the
girl recipient. She also has
an outstanding 4-H record.
“We are happy for C.F.
and were pleased that a
winner came from
Perquimans County.
Hopefully more young folks
will be interested in 4-H
when they realize the
benefits associated with
such a fine youth
organization”, said Jeff
Copeland, livestock and 4-H
extension agent.
