The Bandon Notebook - Our Country’s Heros And Heroines
By Maggie B,
Hi, Neighbors! Let’s pay
tribute to the many unsung
heroes and heroines in our
country today - the Public
School Teachers! These
individuals are located in
every community of
America, both rich and
poor, and much too often
they are thoughtlessly
condemned but far too
seldom commended.
Perhaps I’m selfish for my
granddaughter is a public
school teacher but I think it
should concern every
citizen.
Each teacher has devoted
a large portion of his or her
life in preparation for the
job they hold and most of
them continue to develop
knowledge in their par
ticular field on their own
time and at their own ex
pense. Teachers are ex
pected to have the wisdom
of Solomon and the patience
of Job but it seems that we
are unwilling to pay them
what they are worth. Their
salaries are less than that of
many skilled workers, other
professional groups and
even many laborers! We
should be ashamed of this!
In today’s society, teachers
are required to instill in
their students many values
usually taught in the home -
common courtesy, dif
ference between right and
wrong, moral values,
obedience, etc. In addition,
they are expected to be
experts in reading, math,

Our teachers must inspire
and lead others. They give
strength to every aspect of
society and are patriotic,
sincere, hard-working, law
abiding and community
oriented. I’d hate to think of
our country without these
dedicated individuals.
The Public School
Teachers are very special
people and deserve our
highest respect. We trust to
their care our most precious
possession - our children,
the hope of our future.

The author is unknown, but I
think it’s a fitting tribute:
“A builder builded a temple; he wrought with care and skill;
Pillars and groins and arches were fashioned to meet his
will;
And men said when they saw its beauty: ‘lt shall never know
decay.
Great is thy skill, O Builder, thy fame shall endure for aye.’
“A teacher builded a temple; she wrought with skill and
care; -
Forming each pillar with patience, laying each stone with
prayer.
None saw the unceasing effort; none knew of the marvelous
plan;
For the temple the teacher builded was unseen by the eyes of
man.
Gone is the builder’s temple; - crumbled into the dust,
Pillar and groin and arches food for consuming rust;
But the temple the teacher builded shall endure while the
ages roll -
For that beautiful, unseen temple was a child’s immortal
soul.” _
A hazy mist covered the
waters of the mighty
Chowan as this Lord’s Day
dawned but the sun was out
in all its glory before time to
leave home to enter God’s
House to thank Him for His
countless blessings.
Those assembled for
Sunday School at Bandon
Chapel were joyfully
welcomed by Supt. Meta
Mason. They ware treated to
a moving and beautiful
lesson, lovingly taught by
Deacon Wm. F. Smith,
entitled “God Makes a
Covenant”, Gen. 15:1-6, 12-
18. Aim was that adults will
enter by faith into a one-to
one relationship with God -a
closer walk with our
Heavenly Father who loves
each of us.

At our Worship Service,
Bandon’s Shepherd, Rev.
Robert S. Harrell, presented
a powerful message entitled
“The Church - Whose
Responsibility?”, 1 Peter
4:8-11. Resume: The work
of the Church cannot
progress unless
EVERYBODY shares the
responsibility. By the Grace
of God, all of us have some
talent, however small, that
we can put to use in His
church. There is always
something you can do to
help. 1 Peter reminds us
that we are all stewards of
God’s grace. Even though
we have elected officials to
fill positions in our church,
let us not forget that each
one of us is responsible for
doing our part and using our
talents for God’s glory.
At the conclusion of the
Worship Service, the Annual
Fall Church Conference was
called to order by
Moderator, Pastor Bob, who
opened with prayer. The
proposed change to the By
- was unanimously
approved. The proposed
budget submitted by the
Budget Committee was
unamimously approved as a
guide for the Board of
Deacons. The following new
officers for 1982 - 83 were
elected: Deacons: Jessie
Hitt and Clayton Inskeep;
Trustee: Jackson
Strickland; Secretary of
Congregation: Barbara
Cullipher; Asst. Sec. of
Congregation: Becky Hege;

Our sincere sympathy is
extended to the family and
friends of Margaret Eash of
Toledo, Ohio, sister of Len
Koraska, whose soul passed
through the veil Friday,
Sept. 10th, to a place far
more beautiful than words
can describe. Her job on this
earthly planet was finished.
The Master called her home
to a place where there is not
sorrow or suffering and
where she is at peace at last.
