Obituaries
Ercell S. Webb
Ercell S. Webb, 72, of
Greenville died September
20 after a prolonged illness.
Mr. Webb was a native of
Chowan County and a
graduate of Wake. Forest
University. He was a public
school teacher in Pine Hurst
and was later associated
with the North Carolina
Board of Education in
Raleigh. He moved to
Greenville in 1958 at which
time he joined Carolina
Dairy Products Inc.
He was a member of
Memorial Baptist Church,
the Greenville Rotary Club,
Brook Valley Country Club
and the Greenville Country
Club.
Mr. Webb was the son of
the late Mae Simpson Webb
and the late J.B. Webb. He is
survived by his wife, Mrs.

Edenton and Mrs. Robert L.

grandchildren and three
step grandchildren.
Graveside services were
held in Pinewood Memorial
Park in Greenville on
September 22 at 11 A.M.
Services were conducted by
the Rev. E.P. Binson and
the Rev. L.P. Houston, Jr.
Dr. A. Guy Hope
Dr. A. Guy Hope, 68, of
Kill Devil Hills, formerly of
Richmond, died September
14, in an Elizabeth City
hospital.
A native of Norfolk Va., he
served for 30 years as a U.S.
Foreign Service Officer.
Hope was appointed by
President Eisenhower as
U.S. Foreign Service Officer
after serving as Officer in
Charge of Economifc Affairs
at the Office of Chinese
Affairs in the State
Department.
A veteran of WWII, he
retired from the Navy as a
Commander in 1945. He was
appointed Economic
Analyst in the Foreign
Service -Auxiliary at
Shanghai, China, and served
as Consul and Embassy
Secretary at Dairen, China;
Brussels, Belgium and Tel
Aviv, Israel.
He also served as Consul
General in Istanbul, Turkey
and as Deputy Chief of
Mission in Abidjan, Ivory
Coast, Africa.
Hope received his
Bachelor of Law Degree

from the* University o's
Virginia in 1936 and did
graduate work at Columbia
University in New York and
Oxford ‘University in
England. He also held
degrees from George
Washington University and
Syracuse University.
Survivors include his wife,
Myda Weaver Hope; two
daughters, Anne Hope
Hamrick of Midlothian, Va.
and Jean Hope Nye of
Charlotte, N.C.; a step
daughter, Mildred Price
Kaufmatin' of Northridge,
Calif.; a sister, Elvie Hope
McClennan of Troutville,
Va.; two brothers, Frank
Hope of Vienna, Va. and
Rev. Winston Hope of Kill
Devil Hills, and six grand
children. Graveside ser
vices were held at noon on
Friday at Rock Creek
Cemetery, DACOR Section,
Washington, D.C.

William Clarence O'Neal,
Sr., 46, of Route 1, Edenton
died September 16 at Walter
Reed Medical Center,
Washington, D.C. after a
brief illness.
He was a native of
Marion, N.C. and a retired
U.S. Air Force Tech.
Seargent. He was also a

of Va. Beach, Va.
Funeral services were
held at 2 P.M. September 19
at Bandon Chapel by the
Rev. Robert Harrell. Burial
follwed at Beaver Hill
Cemetery.
Kenneth J. Copeland
Kenneth James Copeland,
69, of Route 1, Edenton died
September l1 at the Chowan
Hospital after a year long
illness.
Mr. Copeland was a
farmer, a member of the
Chowan Ruritan Club and a
honorary member of the
Oak Grove Hunting Club. He
was also a 1 member of
Ballards Bridge Baptist
Church.
He was the son of the late
Mrs. Rosa Brinkley
Copeland and the late
Nerious James Copeland.
He is survived by his wife
Mrs. Louise Forehand
Copeland, and his two,
children; Mr. James K.
Copeland of Rqute 1,
Edenton and Mrs. Peggy
Sunstrom of Virginia Beach,
Va. He is also survived by a
brother Milton C. Copeland
of Tyner and two sisters
Mrs. Myrtle Winslow of
Corapeake, N.C. and Mrs.
Doris Blanchard of Tyner.
The funeral service was
held at Ballards Bridge
Baptist Church at 4 P.M.
September 19, by the Rev.
George Cooke. Burial was in
Ballards Bridge Baptist
Church Cemetery.

principles of jet engines.
Their studies included
engine lubrication, ignition
and fuel systems.
Additionally, they studied
the procedures for refueling
and defueling aircraft; for
