Mayan mothers would hang beads in front of their children's eyes to make them permanently cross-eyed and consequently, "more beautiful.” Needless to say, tastes have changed significantly since then. Modern parents are con cerned about correcting this condition, not inflicting it. What does it mean to be "cross-eyed"? To begin with, the technical term is strabismus, and it applies to all abnormalities in coor dination of the movements of the two eyes, not only those 1 which are deviated inward (convergent). In at tendance at the ceremony were members of the Northeastern North Carolina Chapter of The Juvenile Diabetes Foun dation and other interested persons. The proclamation stated: WHEREAS diabetes, a chronic, metabolic disorder which adversely affects the body’s ability to manufacture or utilize in sulin, now afficts over twelve million Americans; and WHEREAS health care costs resulting from diabetes now exceed. $7 billion in the form of disability payments and lost wage costs; and WHEREAS the cause and prevention of diabetes is still unknown and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, an accredited volunteer health agency, has as its primary objective the support and funding of research to prevent com plications of diabetes and ultimately find a cure; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Roy L. Harrell Mayor of the city of Edenton, North Carolina, do hereby proclaim the month of October, 1982 as “Juvenile Diabetes Month”. Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) In ternational is the major funding source for diabetes research in the world. Organized in 1970 by a group of parents whose children suffered from the disease, JDF to research, many new breakthroughs have oc curred in the treatment of this disease and cancer. JDF International con tributed $4.9 million to diabetes research this year. For further information, contact the Northeastern North Carolina Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, P.O.
