Jesse Helms’ political strength across North Carolina has withstood his recent setbacks in Congress, but a statewide poll in dicated Gov. Jim Hunt probably would defeat Helms if the two were op ponents in a senatorial contest being held today. Fifty - one per cent of the adult North Carolinians surveyed by the Carolina Poll October 1-6 said they would vote for Hunt in such an election, and 35 per cent said they would choose Helms. Those results are nearly identical to the findings of a Carolina Poll conducted last spring. A poll conducted in the fall of 1981 had shown Hunt leading, but by a smaller margin. Neither Hunt nor Helms has an nounced his candidacy for the Senate, but a contest between the two is widely expected. The Carolina Poll is conducted by students and faculty members in the School of Journalism of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Its latest finding indicate that Helms, while still trailing Hunt in popularity, has held his supporters at a time when President Ronald Reagan’s public approval has dropped in recent polls. Still, Helms’ support is strongest - 71 per cent - among those who said they thought the President was doing an excellent job. Conversely, 73 per cent of those who said Reagan was doing a poor job said they would choose Hunt. The poll was conducted after Helms had failed in his efforts to pass legislation for school prayer and against Chicken Kitchen ’fir 77// n - Lfidry Bros. Storage Co. But the senator’s supporters did not appear to have been affected by those events. “I think he is a deterrent to liberalism,” a retired Forsyth County man said. “Hunt is a little more liberal than I like.” A Durham man echoed those sentiments. “I’m more of a conservative,” he said. “Economically, I agree with Helms more than Hunt.” Hunt supporters were less likely to cite ideological grounds for support. “I fed like (Hunt) is a pretty good man,” said a retired Hoke County man. “I think he’s done a pretty good job (as governor). To my mind, Hunt might do a better job.” Others put their support in terms of opposition to Helms. Hunt’s support was stronger among women than men, and it was strongest among urban populations, blacks, retired people and those with lower incomes. Fifty - four per cent of the women polled said they would vote for Hunt, and 30 per cent preferred Helms. Among men, 47 per cent favored Hunt, and 42 per cent chose Helms. Hunt would carry both urban and rural areas of the election were hdd today, but his margin in the poll was greater in urban areas, where he led Helms by 56 per cent to 31 per cent. In rural areas it was 47 per cent to 38 per cent. In the Piedmont, where most North Carolina cities are located, 53 per cent of those polled supported Hunt and 36 per cent were for Helms. Traditionally Democratic Eastern North Carolina favored Hunt by 51 per cent to 31 per cent for Helms. In the mountains, whose Republicanism has been stronger, Hunt’s lead was only 45 per cent to 42 per cent. Among blacks, 70 per cent chose Hunt and 15 per cent picked Helms. But the governor’s support was down 10 per cent since last spring’s poll, taken before criticism of Hunt from some black leaders for his decision to dump PCB - contaminated soil in heavily black Warren County. The governor also has been accused of not helping black candidate H.M. (Mickey) Michaux in the Second Congressional District Democratic primary. Retired people expressed support for Hunt by a margin of more than two- to - one. Sixty per cent of these ANNOUNCING NEW OFFICE LOCATION Marshall S.
