Page 8-A Thursday, January 6, 1983 OAR Sponsors history Contest hi? i • oi i The Edenton Tea Party National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has recently spon sored an American History Essay Contest in the Chowan and Perquimans County schools. Students in grades 5, 6,7 and 8 were eligible to eater. The subject was “Everyday Life In Early American 1750-1850”. Mrs. Marguerite Burch, History Month Chairman, conducted the contest and reports that 142 children par ticipated and 47 essays were selected by teachers to be judged. February will be designated as American History Month and obser vance by the Chapter is spon soring the contest and inviting the first place winners to the February meeting to read their essays to the members, parents, teachers and in terested friends. They will receive awards during the meeting. By sponsoring the contest annually for students, the DAR aims to encourage patriotism, provide motiva tion for students to become familiar with historical events and to promote growth in appreciation for our American heritage. The essays judged first place in each grade have been sent to the District Director for further judging. The local winners for 1982 are: Fifth Grade First Place—Chad Ran dolph Johnson-Swain Elemen tary School; Second Place— Megan Shales-Hertford Grammar School ; Honorable Mention—Robert Winbome- White Oak Elementary School. Sixth Grade First Place—Frances Sally Jester-Hertford Grammar School; Second Place—Tracy Ellen Brown-Hertford Gram mar School; Honorable Mention—Peter John Mitchener-Swain Elementary School. Eighth Grade First Place—Mary Catherine Byrum-Chowan Junior High School; Second Place—Michele Krause- Chowan Junior High School; Honorable Mention—Robin Elain Tynch-Chowan Junior High School. Lt. Ryan To Speak J.t- Lt. Cdr. James H. Ryan, USNR, Ret., will be the speaker at the meeting of the Edenton Tea Party Chapter, DAR, at 1 P.M., January 12, at Boswell’s Restaurant. Lt. Cdr. Ryan is Naval Science Instructor, Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Unit, at John A. Holmes High School. Lt. Cdr. Ryan, a native of Patterson, N.J., received his B.S. in Industrial Relations from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. and his M.S. in International Relations from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He received his Ensign’s Commission in the Navy in 1960, and served shipboard assignments through 1967, supervising equipment opera tion and maintenance for communications, electronic data systems, marine propul sion and weapons. In 1968, he served in the Coastal Surveillance command Republic of Vietnam. From 1968 through 1970, Lt. Cdr. Ryan taught various sub jects, at the University of Virginia. From 1971 to 1981, he served as executive officer for several Naval Commands, including the Readiness Sup port Group, Norfolk, Va., responsible for the planning aqd supervision of the logistic regmrements for the more than 100 surface combat ships homeported there. During this tour of service he attend ed, the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I. Jf. Cdr. Ryan retired from ve duty in 1981, and now resides with his wife, Pasty, and their children, Tully and Kelly, on Bella Vista Drive, Edenton.
