ATTEND RECEPTION - N.C. Symphony Chamber Orchestra Associate Conductor James Ogle (center) is shown here talking with Terry Wackelin, President of the Chowan Chapter of the N.C. Symphony and Superintendent of Edenton-Chowan Schools, Dr. John Dunn, at a reception in the band room at John A. Holmes High School. Hie reception was held Thur sday February 24. Letter To The Herald Editor The recent establishment of a new department “for women” in State Government shows clearly that Mr. Hunt will stop at nothing to pro mote his Senatorial dream at taxpayer’s expense. We have had a freeze on teacher pay and state worker’s pay, but we have not had a atorial campaign of Mr. Hunt. When I announced for the U.S. Senate last September, I stated I would focus on three main issues: 1. Controlling a run-a-way defense budget. 2. Working to reduce deficit spending by not engaging in customary back-scratching in Washington. 3. Promising to get this na tion to re-commit ourselves to the unfinished agneda toward making life better for black Americans. What is going on in North Carol in State Government in regard to our black empiuyees: A recent report from the North Carolina Human Rela tion QouncU confirmed this. There has been a decline of minorities in administration category, and a leveling off in the professional category. . This decline has taken place even though 220 personnel changes were made at these levels during 1982. The Human Relations Council noted; however, a raise in the employment of women in all categories. What this means in State Government and most other public and private employment is opportunities for women, more often than not • white women - are being, made at the expense of previous gains made by black employees. I am not against oppor tunities for women. I support ERA and other efforts to benefit all women: however, I do not feel opportunities for women must be made at the expense of meager gains made by blacks in recent years. Harriil Jones 1104 E. Swain had five winners. In 4th grade, first place was John Johnson from Mrs. Byrum's room. In 5th grade, first place was Kevin Goodwin in Mrs. Roberts' room. Second place was Denise Moye from Mrs. Hollo well'8 room. In 6th grade, first place was Jonathan Morgan in Mrs. Walker’s room. Second place was Chad Johnson in Mrs. Stall’s room. We are very proud of these students. Wednesday the school was decorated with musical in struments as the teachers readied their classes for the North Carolina Symphony. Mrs. P. Byrum had her students do reports on com posers. She displayed these by the auditorium. Mrs. Byrum; Mrs. Hollowell and Mrs. Swanner decorated this area with students’ musical * oO artwork. Mrs. RoberWitaade a large welcoming banner. Wednesday morning the whole student body met in the auditorium. Mrs. Sutton, even with a sore throat, got us ready to sing “The Old Tar River" with the symphony. Thursday was Symphony Day. White Oak and Chowan joined us. The conductor spoke about passive and ac tive listening. He taught the students about speed and mood in music. Then Mrs. HolIowelPs 5th- graders^ played on the bells and autoharp for the Symphony. They were fabulous. They sounded like one person because each child was in tune perfectly. Then, the whole audience sang. Mr. John Becker of Edenton nar rated “Peter and the Wolf": for us as the Symphony played. The surprise was when the Symphony played an extra song for us. It was a Hungarian dance. Next week, we have six week tests. Please start help ing your child prepare. Thank you.
