And Dental Problems
Stress can affect you in many
ways, sometimes leading to den
tal problems when habits such as
grinding the teeth develop. Brux
ism, or grinding of the teeth, is
usually an unconscious activity,
occuring during the night when
you're sleeping. The results are
often felt in the morning when you
feel pain or a dull aching in your
jaw joints. This is one of the symp
toms of temporomandibular joint
syndrome (TMJ), and the pro
blems can intensify until the con
dition is treated by your dentist.
Many forms of treatment are
available, including the use of
relaxation drugs as well as exer
cises. The goal is to help return
the jaw to its normal function,
eliminating the muscle spasms
that cause pain and discomfort.
Treatment will also include atten
tion to other dental problems
caused by grinding of the teeth.
One of the most common is
malocclusion or improperly align
ed teeth, which can intensify the
pain associated with tem
poromandibular joint syndrome
and cause it to spread to other
areas of the head and neck.

Astigmatism is a refractive er
ror which is somewhat difficult to
understand. It usually results from
a cornea that isn’t perfectly round,
but shaped more like a football
than the usual basketball shape.
It might help to imagine the cor
nea (lens of the eye) as a dome
divided into segments by lines
drawn across its surface that in
tersect at its center, like the
longitudinal lines on a globe. The
~T£Sr?nal eyETWffia'SpHettCal
nea.h^st
differently curveahnes, with any
given line either flatter or steeper
than the one perpendicular to it.
The result is that the vertical and
horizontal components of both
near and far images can’t focus,
together. The image appears
blurry.
In other instances, it is the
crystalline lens — not the cornea
— which is at fault in astigmatism.
In either case, correction can be
made with contact lenses or
spectacles.
