Farmer Awards Sponsored The N.C. State Fair and N.C. Farm Bureau Federation will i sponsor a Young Female Farmer j of the Year Award and a Young Male Farmer of the Year Award, , to be given during the 1985 North ’• Carolina State Fair. Although the \ Young Female Farmer of the Year Award has been sponsored by these groups since 1980, this . year the swan! competition has been expanded to include a young . male farmer category. The State Fair and the N.C. Farm Bureau Federation, through its Young Farmer Rancher organization, sponsor these awards to recognize ex cellence in management and pro duction among the young farmers of this state. Also recognized are these young farmers’ involvement in industry, civic and community activities. i The N.C. Department of Agriculture Public Affairs Divi sion will coordinate the applica tion process, with all applications coded upon receipt. The identity of applicants will be identified only by code number, with their iden tities revealed only after final selections are made. Therefore, applicants should be careful not to identify themselves or their farm names any place on the applica tion other than page 1 of the application. Applications can be obtained at the Chowan County Agricultural Extension Office. Any young farmer who is 35 years of age or less and has the major production management and decision - mak ing role in a farming operation is eligible. Chowan County has plenty of young farmers who will quality so pick up an application form so you can nominate on outstanding young farmer. Deadline is July 1, 1985. The Arrowhead Digest By Maggie B. College's Featured Speakers MURFREESBORO, NC-Dr. Ira Hudgins of Franklin, Va. and Dr. Norman A. Wiggins of Buies Creek will be the featured speakers as Chowan College closes its 137th year Sunday, May 12. Hudgins, who retired in 1983 after 32 years as pastor of Franklin Baptist Church, will speak at the 11 a.m. bac calaureate service. Wiggins, president of Campbell University and the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, will be the 2 p.m. commencement speaker. Both programs will be held in the Helms Center. Brunch for graduates, their parents, and faculty and staff will served at 9:30 a.m. in Thomas Cafeteria. Wiggins is a graduate of Camp bell College and Wake Forest Col lege and holds law degrees from Wake Forest and Columbia University. He taught at trust and banking schools in Texas, Loui siana, Illinois, and in North Carolina at Brevard College and Campbell. He also served 12 years at Wake Forest, rising to the posi tions of professor of law and general counsel. Hudgins is a graduate of the University of Richmond and Crozer Theological Seminary and received the M.A. from the University of Pennsylvainia. His former pastorates includes the Leesburg Va.
