Many Killed While Not Wearing Seat Belts pearly 300 people not wearing seat belts died in automobile ac cidents in North Carolina during the first four months of this year according to N.C. Division of Motor Vehicle reports. Mrs. Dan K. Moore ^chairman of Seat Belts for Safety, said, “The unnecessary loss of so many North Carolinians in such a short period is a recurring tragedy our state can longer ignore.’’ Seat Belts for Safety complied the statistics based on DMV acci dent reports. The organization is a coalition of over a dozen statewide organizations, with thousands of members supporting the passage of a state law requir ing the use of seat belts The bill passed the Senate 30-20. It is being considered by the House Highway Safety Committee. The accident reports indicated from January 1-April 30, 270 per sons not wearing seat belts were killed, or more than two per day. Based on previous years, an estimated 2,500 persons not wear ing seat belts were seriously in jured during the same period. The majority of victims were under 40. Many persons not wear ing seat belts were killed after be ing thrown from their vehicles. Experts from the UNC Highway Research Center have estimated that two out of every three people killed in automobile accidents would have been saved if they had worn seat belts. The an nual meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Raleigh, May 17-18. Mrs. Clark is the national Cam paign chairperson for the American Heart Association, and has spoken all across the country about the events leading up to her husband's decision to become the first recipient of the permanent artificial heart. Clark suffered from a degenerative disease of the heart muscle that causes it to lose the resiliency necessary to suffi ciently pump blood throughout the body. He lived 112 days with the artificial heart, before other health complications ended his life. In addition to Mrs. Clark's presentation, special sessions will be held for doctors, nurses and other allied medical professionsls, concerning other medical breakthroughs, such as angioplas ty, a preventive surgical techni que for heart attack patients, and heart transplants. Evans Receives Dental Certification CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Lisa Ann Evans of Edenton will receive a dental assistant cer tificate during graduation ceremonies at the University .of North Carolina School of Den tistry here on May 24. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Evans of Rt. 1, Edenton. Before entering the program in 1984, she graduated from John A. Holmes High School. Following graduation she will reside in Raleigh where she will work as a dental assistant.
