Loretta Guard, above, is director of the new media center at D.F. Walker School. While organizing the new center has been a tremen dous undertaking, she is very pleased with the way things are shap ing up there. (Staff photo by Gail Mize) New media center almost completed By Rebecca Bunch Students attending D.F. Walker School are the lucky recipients of a newly renovated media center, designed to make learning a more pleasurable experience. Included in the 3,000 sq. ft. area are a storytelling area, con ference room, magazine room, new audio-visual equipment, a reading/browsing area, reference room, office, and a computer room with 16 computer terminals. The center, which is designed to serve about 960 students in grades K-6, will be under the supervision of Loretta Guard, librarian/direc tor, and Linda Flemming, media assistant. Guard says that while she and Flemming have worked very hard in moving books and setting up the new media com plex, they couldn't have ac complished nearly as much as they have “without the help of some very interested parent volunteers, who were kind enough to help out’’. The calm, peaceful environ ment in the new Center has been enhanced through the use of neutral-colored walls and a large Gorillas is cat’s best friend Puppy the Cat, shopkeeper and cat-in-residence at Manteo Book favorite book, KoKo’s Kitten. This true story of a gorilla who asks for a kitten is simply written by Dr. Francine Patterson, KoKo's "parent." The book is documented with full color photographs. While found in our children's section, this is a book that will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. If you’d like to read more about this very special gorilla, pick up The Education of KoKo by Dr. Patter son and Eugene Linden. It sells for $7.95 plus tax. Guard remarks that while it takes about an hour twice a week to water them, "it's well worth the effort, because the plants really make a big dif ference in here". Guard and Flemming are justifiably proud of the new com puter room, also. They say that while quite of few of the kids at tending Walker already are familiar with computers, the ad dition of a special room in the new center will give a greater number of students an opportunity to gain direct “hands-on” experience. This new media center is ex tremely versatile, so it can be us ed for a wide variety of learning activities for students. The future of education looks very exciting at D.F. Walker School.
