ENJOYING TURKEY DAY—Layden’s Preschool in Rocky Hock en
joyed a fine Thanksgiving feast this past week. The children were
- dressed like Pilgrims and Indians and made decorations for the din
ner. Their parents supplied all the fixings for a truly delicious
Thanksgiving dinner. A good meal and good fellowship was enjoyed
by all.
Highway Funding Plan Considered
RALEIGH—The 24-member
state transportation board will
consider a highway funding plan
next month that will affect con
struction projects well into the
1990’s.
At its Dec. 12 meeting in
Charlotte, the board is expected to
adopt an updated version of the
Department of Transportation’s
Transportation Improvement
Program (TIP). The TIP is the
basic, planning document which
- sets highway * construction
priorities statewide. It was last
updated in October 1985.
In addition to consideration of
the TIP, the board will conduct
regular business and it expected
to award highway improvement
contracts totaling over $52.1
million.
Included are contracts for con
struction of an additional 1.2 miles
of NC-16 in Gaston amd Mecklen
burg counties, for widening a
.6-mile section of the 1-85
Charlotte Bypass, for widening
and resurfacing work on 9.9 miles
of US 13-17 south of Windsor in
Bertie County and for widening 1.2
miles of Huffman Mill Road in
Burlington.
Contracts for replacing bridges
in eight counties will be con
sidered, as will contracts for
widening and resurfacing work on
more than 1363 miles of state
primary and secondary highways
in 60 counties throughout the
state. These include the area
counties of Chowan, Washington,
Tyrell, Pasquotank, Perquimans
and Bertie.
Transportation Secretary
James E. Harrington serves as
chairman of the board.
The meeting starts at 9 a.m. in
the Morrison B Room in the Park
Hotel at 2200 Rexford Road.
On Thursday Dec. 11, the board
will meet in committee work ses
sions at various locations in the
hotel.

It sounds like an adventure
story or a spy novel.
A hushed whisper from a
frightened government official—
“They are lying, they are hiding
the truth. You wouldn’t believe
it.”
It is the imaginary horrible
statement about the government
that so often is the foundation of
the plot of a good spy novel.
Bad people in the government
deceiving the rest of us and cover
ing up some dangerous plot or
secret.
Like assassinations and kid
nappings, government lying is
better in the books than in real
life.
Maybe it’s okay in Russia and
other countries, but it’s not okay
here.
When our government does lie
to us we ought to get angry. We
ought to stay angry until those in
government who do lie to us are
thrown out.
That is why President Reagan
ought to be sure that the whole
truth about Iran and Nicaragua
and Swiss banks is on the table
before he tells us again that
everything has been taken care of.
We want to believe him. We
need to believe him.
But if it becomes clear that we
can’t believe him, we will show
him no mercy.
Some other random, personal
thoughts about the Iranian crisis.
• Ed Meese is not the right per
son to head an independent inves
tigation of the administration’s
actions. He is too close to the
President—too protective—too
partisan—too much involved.
- He didn’t get off to a good start
last week when he tried to explain
away the portion of the arms sale
receipts that went to the Contras
by saying that “it was never
United States funds. It was never
the property of United States offi
cials. So we have no control over
that whatsoever.”
. .^-Tije Eiesident went about it
tiwwr’ong -way! but he was-not
wrong to try to find a way to
prepare for friendlier relations
with Iran. We don’t like its
government. We are still angry
about our hostages.
But Iran—its oil and its
strategic location—is as impor
tant to us now as it ever was.
It would be a mistake to stop
thinking about ways to further our
interest in Iran—just because this
effort took the wrong approach.
• Finally, this is a time to pull
together. Our country is in trou
ble. Those who love the United
States will not use this crisis to
pull us apart.

in our community?
