QUEEN STREET ii—i—i nni ZA® DOWD REAL ESTATE 201 S. BROAD STREET 482-4131 Help Available Dear Editor: I will appreciate very much for public awareness of the spinal cord injured your giving the following letter space in your newspaper since I feel there are many we have not reached and, too, new injuries continue to occur. Since November 26, 1980, my husband has been paralyzed from the waist down, faced other obstacles, and confined to a wheelchair with a spinal cord in jury as a result of a fall from a ladder. In July, 1982, we joined the Spinal Cord Society. This is a non profit international organization that is moving fast towards its goal of cure for paralysis due to spinal cord injury. SCS opened a Spinal Center at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics, Minneapolis, Minnesota, November 20,1984. It is the first and only one in the world specializing in advanced treat ment for chronic spinal cord in jury and related neural problems. The Spinal Center is very suc cessful and with new research in various locations, we are excited and have high hopes that it will be beneficial to the many chronic spinal cord injured victims and those with related afflictions who have suffered and been handicap ped for so many years. The pro gram may be the beginning of the end of lifetime paralysis. Several cure research con ferences have been held and the 1987 International Convention at 1 which sixteen (16) researchers will be speaking will be held in ; Seattle, Washington, July 23-24, in \ the Red Lion Inn. I feel we have many people who ] are either a victim, have a relative, a friend, or are just plain interested that may not be aware rf this very worthwhile organiza tion. I believe the paralyzed need :o know of the advances being nade in cure research. A vheelchair is a lonely place if you ;hink no one cares. For those who ire interested and concerned, alease write Spinal Cord Society, f*.0. Box 69, Minneapolis, Minne- ' iota 55445. Also, you may call 218) 739-5252 or (218) 739-5261. (You must file one or the other) Employees, you now have a choice. You can file either the new four page W-4 tax withholding term or the new two-page W-4A form. The shorter withholding form was designed by the IRS after the Service was widely criticized for the length and complexity of the four-page W-4. The simpler W-4A forms should be received by employers sometime In April. If you’ve already filed the longer W-4 with your employer, you’ve fulfill ed your obligation. If you haven’t, you have until October 1,1987, to file one or the other of the new W-4s. How do you decide which term to use? The IRS indicates that If your affairs are simple, you can use the W-4A, However, the form's simplicity is likely to result In overwithholding. (The excess will be refunded to you when you file your 1987 tax return.) If your affairs are more complex, you will get your withholding closer to your actual liability by filling out the longer W-4. That includes working couples, taxpayers with substantial non-wage Income, and those with many deductions and credits. Though the deadline Is in October, you should complete a W-4 or W-4A as soon as possible to adjust your withholding to bring it In line with re quirements of the new tax law. Waiting until later In the year could result in underwithholding which might expose you to underpayment penalties Under the 1986 Tax Reform Act, you are required to prepay at least 90% of your current year tax liability or 100% of your prior year’s tax liability Embarrassed by the furor created by the four page W-4, the IRS has indicated that It will not assess Interest penalties on taxpayers who make a "good faith” attempt to accurately complete their W-4s (or W-4As) and submit them by June 1,1987. You should keep the completed worksheet that is a part of the form to demonstrate your "good faith" attempt if you end up being underwithheld and subject to a penalty. SYKES & COMPANY, P.A.
