in Edenton. The featured attrac
tion will be “The Lost Colony”, the
oldest existing film made in North
Carolina. It tells the story of
England’s ultimately unsuc
cessful attempts to settle the
Roanoke Island area between the
years 1584 - 1587. Edenton
residents Robert Brent Drane,
Fred Drane and Jule Wood ap
peared in the 1921 film, which was
directed by Elizabeth Grimball of
New York. Mabel Evans of
Manteo wrote the script.
The movie, which was produc
ed by the State Board of Educa
tion in a collaboration with the
State Historical Commission, was
originally intended to be the first
in a planned series entitled,
“North Carolina Pictorial
History”, but none of the other
films were ever made. During its
initial release period, the five reel,
45-minute film was shown in
schools and communities
throughout North Carolina. It
preceeded the Paul Green outdoor
drama of the same name by 16
years.
Tom Whiteside, a filmmaker
and film historian, will bring the
movie to Edenton. He is current
ly the visitiiig artist at Halifax
Community College, and has been
studying the state’s film history
for the past two years. A showing
of several of Whiteside’s ex
perimental films is planned for
this summer in the North Carolina
Artists’ Exhibition at the N.C.
Museum of Art in Raleigh.
He is married to the former
Susan Inglis, daughter of Ross
and Frances Inglis of Edenton.
The Whitesides live with their two
children in Halifax, N.C.
Due to limited seating, reserva
tions will be required. To reserve
