Anti-Coagulant. Recalled RALEIGH—Food and Drug Protection Division officials of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture are advising all per sons taking a 7.5 milligram (mg) dose of the drug Coumadin pur chased after March 19 to return the prescription to their phar macy. Coumadin is an anti coagulant. The 7.5 milligram Coumadin tablets are yellow, and are being recalled because one lot of Coumadin, numbered YO 244B may contain oversized tablets which, if taken, would represent a significant overdose. An overdose of this kind would increase clot ting time, which may result in hemorrhaging. Lot numbers are not normally on patient bottles, but are on the labels of bottles distributed to pharmacists. Pharmacists will examine the Coumadin tablets brought back to the pharmacy for lot determination and possible replacement. DuPont Company, makers of the drug Coumadin, have asked for the voluntary recall, but stress that it is important that patients continue their medication. The other tablet strengths of Coumadin are not affected and should continue to be used as prescribed. Next to tlw Airport .feUCKY AND HOPEFUL—Weety, left, is one of the adult dogs who witf fortunate enough to find a new home over the weekend. Barbie, right, is still waiting patiently for someone to give her a new perma nent residence and lots of love. If you would like to adopt her, please call 482-4366 or 482-3764 or go by the Chowan County Animal Shelter during visiting hours on Saturday or next Tuesday. •* Footnotes Adoption news from the shelter is better this week. Last Saturday two adult dogs, one puppy and an adult tortoise shell cat were taken to good homes. We derive par ticular pleasure from seeing good adult animals taken. People are inclined to believe that they are better off taking a puppy or a kit ten. But as we have frequently pointed out, when one selects an adult animal one can see and observe what manner of pet it will be. One of the adult dogs selected was Weezy, the black, tan and white female who was delivered to the shelter by her former owner the previous Saturday. Weezy is shown in one of today’s pictures. She was so sad and frightened the week before but went off radiant ly happy with her new owner. Barbie, whose picture appeared last week and is featured again to day, has not yet been lucky. She is an equally appealing dog and quite fastidious. She spends most of her time on top of the dog house in her run, away from the dirt and bustle of the pen. She has a sweet disposition and probably would make a devoted indoor companion for someone living alone. Call 482-3764 or 482-4366 if you can ac commodate a new friend. Remember that whether you acquire a dog from the shelter or already have one from other sources, you must comply with the town and county animal con trol laws and have your pet in oculated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian. Also if your dog bites any person or you are bitten by a dog, you must notify either the Animal Control Office (482-4366) or the Police Depart ment (482-4444). Hie biting dog must be confined for 10 days for rabies observation. If the dog cannot be identified, or captured, the individual who has been bitten may need to undergo rabies inoculation. From this you may see the benefit to both owner and the community in having all dogs clearly identified and wearing a current rabies in oculation tag.
