ABLE Tutors Are Needed The Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) Center at Col lege of The Albemarle needs volunteer reading tutors to help its students this fall, according to center director. Mary Partin. Partin is urging anyone who is willing to give three hours a week helping new readers, to call the center office at 335-0821, extension 227. “Tell your neighbors, friends, co-workers, club members and anyone whom you feel will res pond, that we need tutors,” she said. Training sessions for new volunteers have been scheduled on Monday, September 21 and on Monday, September 28. The first workshop on the 21st will be held from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., and from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The workshop on the 28th will be from 2 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., and from 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Call the Classifieds. (919) 482-4418 QUEEN OF THE FAIR BEAUTY PAGEANT The QUEEN OF THE FAIR BEAUTY PAGEANT will be held on October 17, 1987 at the Chowan County Fair grounds. Young women who are single, high school sophomores, juniors, seniors or who were high school graduates of 1987 may apply. Residents of any county may par ticipate. Judging will be based on beau ty, poise, personality and talent. The winner will receive a $300 cash award, the first runner-up $200, and the se cond runner-up $100. Van Duyn Honored At NCSU Luncheon North Carolina State Universi ty has bestowed a high academic honor on one of its faculty members who works in Easten North Carolina. He is Dr. John Wey Van Duyn who lives in Edenton and work! out of the Tidewater Researcl Station at Plymouth. NCSU named Van Duyn £ Philip Morris Professor at a lun cheon in his honor in Raleigh or Wednesday (Sept. 9). He is th< first off-campus faculty membei ever accorded this honor. Philip Morris Professors receiv ed a $9,000 salary supplemenl made possible by a permanent en dowment established by Philip Morris U.S.A. The endowment established in 1978, enables NCSl to have three Philip Morris Professorships. Van Duyn, an entomologist, is credited with helping develop one of the nation’s first integrated pesl management systems for pro ducers of corn and soybeans. Such systems rely on biological as well as chemical means for controlling pests. Dr. Durward F. Bateman, dean of NCSU’s School of Agriculture and Life Sciences, noted at the luncheon that the coastal area in which Van Duyn works is the most ecologically sensitive agricultural region in the state. Van Duyn has worked at the Tidewater Research Station in Plymouth since 1971. He is a specialist with the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service, a component of NCSU. Dr. Larry Sykes, director of , agricultural programs for Philip i Morris U.S.A., praised Van Duyn i as a “risk taker”. “The nation was built by risk takers,” he added. Van Duyn called his honor “an 1 award to be shared.” “People do their best work,” he said. “when they work cooperatively with other people.” Van Duyn holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida. He earned a doctorate at Clemson Universi ty in 1971, after which he joined the NCSU faculty. He was named assistant professor in 1974, associate professor in 1977 and professor in 1983. He has been named Outstanding Contributor to the North Carolina Soybean Industry, received the NCSU Outstanding Extension Ser vice Award and was nominated in 1985 and 1986 by the En tomological Society of America for its Distinguished Achievement Award for Extension, receiving the award last year. ».* !*» • • I A »»•»» >.#» . The one-day con ference is being held at the Jane S. McKimmon Center on the N.C. State University campus from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. “We have asked every com munity to establish a local task force or coalition on substance abuse,” the Governor said. “The ‘Challenge ’87 conference will help facilitate this process and help local leaders structure these coali tions,” he added. Giant Lobster On Display The largest live spiny lobster on display on the East Coast is at the North Carolina Aquarium at Port Fisher. The 12-pound, 21-inch lobster was caught August 29 by fisher man Raymond H. Key Jr. of Winston-Salem, fishing aboard the Winner Speed Queen out of Carolina Beach. Captain Skeets Winner kept the lobster alive and took it to the Aquarium. Aquarium curator Paul Barr ington identified the specimen as a Panulirus argus, a male over 20 years old. After checking with other major aquariums, Barr ington discovered the surprise catch is the largest spiny lobster on display along Ihe entire East Coast. According to Barrington, spiny lobsters normally range from North Carolina southward to Florida and the Caribbean. They have a normaljsnaximum length of 20 to 24 inches The North Carolina Aquariums, located at Fort Fisher, at Pine Knoll Shores and on Roanoke Island, are open year-round Mon day through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. The Aquariums are ad ministered by the Office of Marine Affairs in the N.C. Department of Administration.
