Chowan Herald Obituary Notices Are Released Willie W. Rawls Willie Walter Rawls, 65, of Route 3, Edenton, died September 12 in Chowan Hospital. A native of Chowan County, he was the hus band of Sarah Welch Rawls. He was a maintenance worker at George C. Moore Co., an Army veteran, and a member of Mt. Olive Church of Christ, Hertford. In addition to his wife, other sur vivors include: three sons - William Rawls, Samuel Rawls and Joseph Rawls, all of Edenton; three daughters - Marion Moore, Barbara Rawls and Catherine Rawls, all of Edenton; six sisters - Annie Privott of Portsmouth, Va., Martha Heckstall of Norfolk, Va., Emma Minor of St. Louis, Miss., Hattie Rawls, Elizabeth G. Rawls and Dorothy White, all of Edenton; one brother - James H. Gregory of Miami, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren. A funeral service was con ducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16 in St. Luke Disciple Church with Elder George McCleese officiating. Burial followed in the cemetery at Mt. Olive Church of Christ in Per quimans County. Rowsom Funeral Home of Edenton was in charge of arrangements. Lunia F. Leary Lunia F. Leary, 89, of 204 West Gale Street, Edenton, died September 8 at her home. A native of Chowan County, she was an employee of the Edenton Peanut Factory and a member of Pro vidence Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include: one brother - Richard R. Foxwell of New York; one sister - Carrie F. Freeman of Edenton; four grand children; 18 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service was con ducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 12 in Providence Mis sionary Baptist Church with Rev. William Bembry officiating. Burial followed in Vine Oak Cemetery. A native of Bertie County, he was a retired truck driver at Hayes Farm and a member of Gale Street Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, Marie Outlaw, other survivors include: Catherine Brothers, Alice 0. Taylor and Lucille Sharpe, all of Edenton, and Lula DeShields of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother - David Outlaw of Suffolk, Va.; four sisters - Leila Martine of Edenton, Helen Holley of Hertford, Ethel Diggs of Suffolk, Va. and Rosie Applewhite of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service was con ducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 13 in Gale Street Bap tist Church with Rev. Randolph Perry officiating. Burial followed in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Rowsom Funeral Home of Edenton was in charge of arrangements. Allen N. Riddick Allen N. Riddick, 91, of Route 1, Tyner, died September 12 at his home. A native of Perquimans County, he had previously work ed on the loading dock at the Navy Base, and was a member of Rid dick Grove Baptist Church in Per quimans County. He is survived by a son, Army Riddick Sr. of Tyner, six grand children, and eight grandchildren. A funeral service was con ducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15 in Riddick Grove Baptist Church with Rev. W.A. Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Rowsom Funeral Home of Edenton was in charge of arrangements. Thomas P. Burgess Thomas Peterson Burgess, 82, of 230 S. Cantey Street, Summer ton, S.C., died August 28 at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home in Columbia, S.C. following a lengthy illness. A native of Summerton, Burgess lived in Ocala for many years. He was a high school prin cipal and coach in North Carolina, head of vocational and adult education in Ocala, and executive officer of Mayport Auxiliary Sta tion, where he was a retired lieutenant commander. Burgess .served as principal; of the old Chowan High School during the 1930’s. In addition to his wife. Marguerite Blackstock Burgess, a native of Edenton, other survivors include: four sisters - Marian Barksdale of Summerton, Alma Oct. 3 - Craft Show and Sale John A. Bryant Elmer Troy Bryant, 60, a resi dent of Route 4, Cape Colony, Edenton and Route 2, Clintwood, Virginia, died September 12 in Chowan Hospital. A native of Clintwood, Va., he was the son of the late Walter V. and Hattie Stanley Fleming. He had been employed as a heavy machine operator with Granite Construc tion Co. of California, was a Bap tist and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors include: three daughters - Debra Davis of Kan sas City, Kansas, Stacy Bryant of Capitola, Calif, and Tammy Hino josa of Calif.; three sons - Ricky Bryant of New York City, N.Y., Johnny Bryant of Calif, and Ran dy Bryant of Kansas City, Kan sas; four sisters - Nora McCoy of Edenton, Ruby Curry Fleming, Lora Phillips and Bertha Mullins, all of Clintwood, Va.; three brothers - Toy Bryant of Clint wood, Va., Vince Bryant of Eustis, Va. and Paul Fleming of Calif.; and six grandchildren. The body was transferred to Miller Funeral Home of Clint wood, Va. for burial. Local ar rangements were handled by Williford-Barham Funeral Home of Edenton. Margurite G. Warden Margurite Goodwin Warden, 78, a former resident of Edenton, died September 13 at a hospital in Stan ford, Conn. A native of Chowan County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Good win and the wife of the late M.R. Warden. Survivors include: one daughter - Barbara Jefferies of New Ca naan, Conn.; two sons - Alfred Warden of New Canaan, Conn, and M.R. Warden Jr. of Penn.; one sister - Mary Sewell of Charlotte; three brothers - J. Wallace Goodwin and Goodwin, both of Edentd Carroll Goodwin of Indian Ind.; and eight grandchild Details concerning funeral ar rangements were unavailable at presstime. Obituary information pij by Williford-Barham Home of Edenton. Marvin C. Newbern Marvin Cad Newbern, 84, of Ahoskie, died Thursday, September 10. He was a retired district state mechanic for the N.C. Department of Transporta tion and a native of Bertie Coun ty. He was the husband of Mrs. Josephine Baker Newbern. In addition to his wife, other sur vivors include: one daughter - Mrs. Sarah Brashear of Wendell; three stepsons - Tracy Smith of Portsmouth, Va., Ray Smith, Doug Smith and Rodney Smith, all of Tyner; three sisters - Mrs. Allegra Newton of Greensboro, Mrs. Mamie Bettie Blanton of Burgaw, Mrs. Virginia Will ingham of Elizabeth City; three grandchildren; six stepgrand children; and two step great grandchildren. A funeral service was con ducted at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 12 in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Burial followed in the Ahoskie Cemetery. Boyce Thomas James “Tommie” Boyce, 78, of Route 1, Tyner, died Sunday, September 13 in Chowan Hospital. A native of Chowan County, he was the-son of the late Edwin and Hattie Bunch Boyce and the husband of the late Don nie By rum Boyce. He was a retired farmer and a member of Center Hill Baptist Church. A native of Chowan Coun ty, he was the son of Alice Mae and Robert Lee Ward Sr.. He worked as a boat finisher, and was a member of Shiloh Disciple Church of Christ, Roper. In addition to his parents, other survivors include: one daughter - Jazinine Cofield of Edenton; one sister - Mrs. Joyce Ward Williams of Norfolk, Va.; maternal grand mother - Mrs. Classie Overton of Roper; and paternal grand parents - Mr. and Mrs. George Ward of Edenton. A funeral service was con 11 lie ted at 4 pm. on Wednesday, September 9 in Shiloh Disciple Church of Christ with Elder A. Cooper officiating. Burial follow ed in the church cemetery. Blair Funeral Service of Eden ton was in charge of arrangements.
