Judge Phil Rowan had his work cut out for him in selecting the best eight pigs since they came from some of the better pork pro ducing families in our area. Connie Byrum exhibited the grand champion from Byrum Hog Farm near Hertford. Michael Smith’s black and white pig was named reserve champion, and his brother’s pig placed seventh. Michael and Tim are sons of Larry and Mary Smith from southern Chowan County. Byrum was the proud recipient of a trophy and $100. Smith receiv ed a trophy and $75. For many of the exhibitors, it was their first time ever showing a pig. Natalie Layden paraded her red and white sixty pounder with the finesse of a pqftshed showman (when she was not in the sawdust). The Smith brothers both placed high for a vtry memorable first show. Several grown-ups including some producer’s wives had their first experience in the show ring. This outstanding group of pigs were sold Thursday through the Albemarle Feeder Pig Cqoperative on Paradise Road ■ near Edenton. Scott Alons, manager of the Co-op and in strumental in putting the show on, reported that the pigs sold for a premium price of $1.20 over market price of $1.0348. The buyer was Albemarle Co-op Association and no sales commission was . charged. < The best part of the show may have been seeing the families en joy participating. People simply had a good time. The James Iredell Association cordially invites you to attend the annual meeting on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Municipal Building Auditorium Vote Dowd For Mayor “Catch The ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF FIRST ADMINISTRATION 911 EMERGENCY NUMBER SYSTEM A cooperative effort by our City and County government* studied and negotiated the protective benefits of this system. We expect our system to be operational in February of 1968 This system will allow our citizens to call our Fire Department, Police Department, Ambulance Service and Sheriff Department by dialing 911. EDENTON HOUSING AUTHORITY We abolished the Edenton Housing Authority and made it a department of the Town of Edenton. This action was taken to correct the mismanagement practices that had been discovered repeatedly by HUD audits over the past twelve years and not corrected. This corrective action will provide for the fair and efficient operation of these dwelling units. COUNCIL-MANAGER FORM OF GOVERNMENT With advice and direction by the North Carolina League of Municipalities we changed our form of government to provide for more efficient day to day operation of our city. The Council-Manager form of government establishes clear lines of authority and responsibility removing the day to day operations from political influences. This form of government has been adopted by 66 of the 71 cities with populations over 5,000 and will serve Edenton well in its future. DUPLICATION OF SERVICES Due to the cooperative attitude that now exists between our County and City government we have been able to eliminate the duplication of some services and save taxpayer's dollars. The combination of our tax billing and collection functions and our joint animal control department are excellent examples of our efforts in this area. COOPERATIVE ATTITUDE We have put aside the "us against them" attitude that had existed in Edenton over the past few years. Our Chamber of Commerce, Historic Edenton, The Edenton-Chowan Arts Council, The Edenton-Chowan School System our County Government and our City Government have all been working together for the betterment of “our” city. This is evidenced by our city's increased financial support of these organizations and our cooperative efforts with the County on the 911 Emergency Number System. FUTURE CONCERNS CITY AND COUNTY DEVELOPMENT PLAN A cooperative effort by our City Government end our County Government with suggestion* and recommendations from such organizations as Historic Edenton, The Chamber of Commerce, and other appointed interested individuals could develop a mass development plan that takes into consideration such factors as population growth, travel and tourism, Industrial growth, and retail businees potential. This study would be instrumental in designating areas for potential growth and plan how to administer this growth. This study would also analyze the City's and County's services and how they will be affected by this development. EDENTON AIRPORT Our airport facilities are a tremendous asset to our community. We need to make a concentrated effort to improve the facilities as well as recruit an aviation related industry thst could locate at our airport to provide services to the flying public. ZONING ORDINANCE UPDATE Our current zoning ordinances have not been updated since 1975. This is one of the most important documents used to administer the growth of our community. We have obtained a grant to update these ordinances and need community suggestions and input from all areas. Correctly written zoning ordinances will allow our city to grow while still protecting the beauty and usefulness of our existing property as well as the investments made by our citizens. ANTI-UTTER CAMPAIGN Utter in our streets end parks is an expensive problem for our city. The problem is not with the clean up aervices provided by the city, but with the people who litter our streets. This lack of pride needs to be addressed by our dty officials by means of a joint effort with our schools, churches, and civic organizations to instill in our citizens the importance of placing their litter in the proper places. CITY AND COUNTY COOPERATION The past two years have been exceptional for cooperation batween our City and County governments. This effort must continue so that we can continue to consolidate duplicated services as well as share ideas and funding for various projects that will benefit our citizens. Our joint 911 Emergency System is a good example of this cooperation between our governing bodies. Two areas that we could study and improve jointly are our airport facilities and services and our bidding inspections and permits. ATTITUDE We must continue to put aside the “us against them attitude”. We must see Edenton as "Our" town with everybody working for the betterment of Edenton as a whole.
