First consider whether the young ster and his or her family are in a position to provide a suit able home for a dog. The fol lowing are questions to con sider in arriving at an an swer: - Will the dog be kept in doors or outdoors? If indoors, , will there be a continuing tol erance for dog hair on the floors and elsewhere if a long-haired breed is chosen, and for the likelihood of fleas in the summer? - Will someone be at home to care for and train a young animal? Children may enjoy pets, but cannot be counted on to provide consistent daily care. - Are means available to provide the necessary shots ahd 'Other veterinarian'care bly 15 years, of the dog? Will the animal be spayed or neutered at a suitable age in order not to contribute to the tragic overpopulation of dogs in the nation? - Is the family likely to i keep the dog and care for it until the end of its days, or to assume responsibility for i finding a suitable home for it if unanticipated circum stances should arise? Unless the answer is "yes" to all of these questions, a dog may not be the right choice of gift. If, however, the prospects for a "good dog home" are as sured, another set of questions must be answered pertaining i puppy is from one of two litters >wan Animal Shelter needing i to grow up. If you can help, t>l at 482-4366 or the SPCA at i SPCA is pleased to report that th the "SPCA FOOTNOTES" a the type of dog to match the prospective circumstance: - If the pet is certain to be in indoor dog, a number of small breeds are possible. Large breeds are fine, too, for ;he true dog lovers who know ;heir tolerance for all that joes with an indoor animal. But in either case a less active )reed will be preferable. \bove all, don't select a small ap dog for someone who may lecide that the poor thing must ive outdoors after all. -- Should or must the dog :hosen be purebred? If so, find i responsible breeder and verify the background of the log to be purchased. -- Will a mixed breed suf fice? If so, consider selecting i young adult dog from the lo :al shelter or any other reli »ble source. The advantage of ;his course is that the disad vantages of an overbred dog nay be avoided and the adult product may be assessed at the ame of selection. However the selection is lone, include the entire fam ly in the process and don't field to the appeal of the first juppy seen. They all look idorable at the start. Consider ;he fate and future of the ani nal in your decision. This vill ensure a Merry Christmas for the dog, too. Call the classifieds... NEED AN AIRLINE TICKET?
