Art Exhibit On Display Works of the late Buel Carson are now on display at College of The Albemarle, and the public is invited to come out and enjoy the talents of this local artist. Carson, who died in August of 1986, was a multi-award winner who painted with oils for six years before moving into watercolors. Once describing the water color process as "honest," Carson said an artist does not have the opportunity with wa tercolors to go back and cover a mistake as he can with oils. "You have to be spontaneous. You can't fake it," he once said. "What you do is for ev erybody to see." Carson took up painting after he and his wife bought a set of oils for their daughter. ,nce his daughter didn't take to using the oils, Carson sat down and started playing with them. Painting then be came a way for Carson to re lax after a day at work as an air traffic controller. y The late JSlizabeth City resident took a number of courses to improve his art. He studied at ^The Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C.; The Phoenix Museum of Art in Phoenix, Arizona; and at College of The Albemarle. He also attended workshops with well known watercolorists Ralph Smith, Tony Couch, Raleigh Kinney, Robert Calrow and William "Skip" Lawrence. He received awards in the following shows: Hampton Center for the Arts "Bays Days" in Hampton, Virginia; New World Festival of the Arts in Manteo; Spring Arts in New Bern; and Pasquotank Art Show in Elizabeth City. Approximately 25 works are being shown in the exhibit going on through January at COA. All are watercolors and pencil drawings except for one oil painting. Play Auditions Are Scheduled Auditions for the George Kaufman comedy, "Solid Gold Cadillac" will be held Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 18 and 19, from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre on Riverside Avenue in Elizabeth City. College of The Albemarle instructor Lucy Vaughan will be directing the comedy co written by Howard Teichman. "We re looking for a wide range of ages for this play," said Vaughan, "and need people in their 20's to 60's." Vaughan added that a lot of men in particular are needed for the play, which is a satire on run-away capitalism and had a long run on Broadway. It's pretty timely, and so satirical that one of those big take-over companies takes over one of its own companies without even knowing it." Performances of "Solid Gold Cadillac" are planned for late February and early March in the Black Box Theatre. For more informa tion, call Vaughan at COA at 335-0821, ext. 235 or at home at 535-5505. College of COO J The Albemarle •By FRANK CASSELL Picture in your mind, if you will, a room with a mother and child in it. The child, boy or girl - it doesn't matter which - is crying because he or she is hungry. The mother is unable to do anything be cause there is no food for her to give the child. Now picture yourself handing food to the mother for herself and her child. Look at the face of the mother as she takes the food and gives it to the child. Look at the eyes of the woman that is speaking the thank-you that comes from the heart. This could happen if you were a volunteer at the Food Pantry. We have had many volun teers since our opening two years ago. Some of the origi nal people are still with us. Others have had to leave us due to death or personal rea sons. We are now looking for some people who would like to be a part of our family. Man or woman, young or old, black or white, if you are of a caring nature and would enjoy help ing others, we need you. Call Martha Guttu at the Pantry on Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. Our number there is 482-2504. This may well be the most important call you will ever make. Help us to help them. Thank you. EVERYBODY’S MARKETPLACE The Chowan Herald’s Classifieds! The fund, a condition of set tlement between the govern ment and some energy com panies, is administered by DOE. , The overcharges occurred when crude pil was under government price controls, between August 19, 1973 and January 27, 1981. Everyone who purchased products re fined from that oil is eligible for a refund of at least $80 per 100,000 gallons of oil-based fuels and greases.
