Hey, everybody, I'm back
»nd I’m better and better!
by, you ask? Because I just
»t back from the Healthful
living and Wellness Insti

vhole conference was geared
establishing and main
lining good health.
If you feel good and feel
aod about yourself, you can
i more productive, happy and
lert. Everybody needs better
lealth! That's not just physi
|1 health, but intellectual,
Scial, mental and spiritual
Is well.
The 24 individuals from
lour schools feel that they got a
Elot of good information from
[the weeklong workshop. We
[are all looking forward to
[sharing this with our schools
[and the community. Believe
je, you'll be hearing much
ire on this subject in the
[near future. In the meantime,
[keep thinking better and bet
[ ter thoughts about yourself.
Holy cow! (I've always
[wanted to use that expression
[in this column.) We are now
getting our cable television
| show, "Schoolin' Around," on
|e air! Look for it on channel
every Wednesday at 12:30
j p.m. and 5:30 p.m. We have
featured quite a few people
from our school system. I'll
bet you see someone you
[know!
Now, finally, kids in
[grades K-12, if you are look
ing for a fantastic experience
| 't^is summer, my suggestion
is that you plan to participate

Jim Cummings of Norfolk
is teaching the course. He is
probably one of the most tal
ented people I worked with at
Old Dominion University. I
have had the opportunity to see
him perform in several pro
ductions, and have acted un
der his direction.
Jim's enthusiasm for the
ater is phenomenal. He is
creative and inspiring. Just
talk with him and you'll catch
his excitement for perform
ing.
He is really looking for
ward to working with the stu
dents here in Chowan County.
This should be an enriching
experience for anyone who is
interested in radio or simply
experimenting and perform
ing.
You can sign up for this
workshop at the Parks and
Recreation Department here
in Edenton.
SPCA: Helpers
Are Needed
Continued From Page 6-A
officials approve this plan,
local taxpayers would be way
ahead of the game. We would
encourage any of our readers
who approve of this idea to let
our elected officials know how
they feel.
And now to the animals
themselves. We have a little
bit of everything at the shelter
this week. Available animals
include a very attractive
brindle male, with Great
Dane features; a male black
lab ftix; a smaller Manch
ester* terrier look-alike; a
fluffy black puppy; and a
gentle, older beagle. There
are others which would make
desirable yard dogs and some
nice, small featured white
puppies.
We also have a wide as
sortment of kittens, spayed
female cats and an indoor
outdoor neutered young male
cat who has a sweet disposi
tion and would enjoy being
cuddled and held.
Call the SPCA at 482-3764
for more information about
the volunteer work on Satur
day or to express interest in
adopting one of these home
less animals. And, thank you
for caring.

Cummings To Instruct Radio^Theatre Workshop
The Chowan Arts Coiincil
and the Edenton-Chowan
Parks and Recreation De
partment are co-sponsoring a
radio theater workshop this
summer, open to all children
in grades K-12.
The three-week program
will run from July 7 through
August 3, Mondays through
Thursdays. K-6 students will
meet from 9:30 a.m. until
11:30 a.m. and students in
grades 7-12 will meet from 7
p.m. until 9 p.m.
Jim Cummings, a Norfolk
resident and theater enthusi
ast, will instruct the course.
Cummings, 23, has a rich
theater background. After
finishing high school in
Richmond, Va., he attended
the American Musical and
Dramatics Academy (AMDA)
in New York City for two
years. AMDA accepts only 16
new students a semester from
the various auditions that are
held all over the country. Jim
was not only accepted, but won
a scholarship as well.
His New York experience
enabled him, among many
other things, to meet and work
with playwright Sam Shep
herd in his off-Broadway pro
duction, "Curse of the Starv
ing Class."
Jim has been living in
Norfolk and taking classes at
Old Dominion University for
two years. Since that time, He
has performed in six different
productions, including "Exe
cution of Justice,” and "Cher
ry Orchard." He has under
taken major roles in all of
these productions.
He has also participated in
several Old Dominion Uni
versity one-act plays as actor
and director. In 1987, Jim or
ganized an ODU . student ra
dio theater show that was
aired over the campus radio.
A group of interested students
got together every week to
come up with material that
would be suitable for the pro
gram's format.
"The show was mostly on
the humorous side," Cum
mings said. "We had outra
geous commercials, soap op
'eras, call-in shows, and
whatever else the group came
up with. We had a good show.
‘/And the best part was making
Ait."
d He hopes that the Summer
1 Youth Radio Theater Work
shop will be just as positive for
the kids in Chowan County. "I
wantjto give the children the
chaiwe to play and explore
their own creativity through
radio theater," he said.
"Everybody involved is going
to be very important because
they will all be part of an en
semble. Each person will
have a definite responsibil
ity."
Besides learning the basic
creative and technical aspects
of radio theater, the group will
produce a radio program that
will be aired over WZBO ra
dio.
Cummings feels that each
participant needs to experi
ment with different ideas. "I
want the group to go out on a
limb, to try new things. You
can't fail as long as you have
tried,” he commented. "Radio
theater can be pretty much off
the-wall."
Anyone interested in tak
ing the radio theater workshop
may sign up now at the Eden
ton-Chowan Parks and Re
creation Office.
