RE0REATION EPORT I Swimming Lessons Contact the Rec. Dept, at 482-8595 for information con cerning openings in the youth swimming lessons being taught in July and August. Summer Youth Workshop The Edenton-Chowan Rec. Dept, is offering a Summer Youth Radio Theatre Work shop for grades K-12 from July 17 through August 3 on Monday through Thursday. Grades K-6 will meet in the morning from 9:30 : 11:30 a.m. Grades 7-12 will meet in the evening from 7-9 p.m. Call the Rec. Dept, for more information. We also wish to thank the hospital staff, Dr. Christopher Perry, Dr. Lance Potocki, Dr. Blakemore and the Rescue Squad for the excellent care they provided. Also, our thanks to the Home Nursing Care team of Georgia Rice and Hazel Alexander for the outstanding service they rendered, which made ours so much easier. Her daughter, Blannie Hall and Family Baker Makes Dean's List Melvin Eugene Baker Jr. and John Crawford Cox of Edenton were among those named to the Dean's List at Campbell University during the spring term. Also named to the list were Bruce Lawrence Daughtry of Ahoskie and David Lewis Evans of Hertford. Other area residents who made the list were Wendy Jo Goodwin, Karen Lowry Poole and Henry Carroll Robertson, all of Elizabeth City. The Dean's List recognizes students who, in the semester just ended, have achieved an average of 3.5 or better in completing 12 or more se mester hours. Seeking Employment? '• OTCJ Open League Softball ^ The Tyner Jaycees cruised '« through the opening round of the Men's Open League post ing a perfect 10-0 record, fci doing so, the Jaycees have opened up a two and one-hdlf game lead over the second place Dirt Boys and a thrde game lead over Albemarle^ Boats, Dillards, Eagles and Merchants. ‘10 The Ready Mules hold to$' spot in Class "E" Division with Bayliner two games back, followed by Exxon and the Bandits, two and one-half and three games, respec tively. Women's League The Starletts increased their lead in the women’s league with wins over Brit thaven and Stone's. The Starletts are now 7-1, followed by Stone's at 5-3 and Vaughan's at 4-4. Britthaven is 0-8. Junior Baseball Keone Coston and Chris White pitched Belk to two wins establishing Belk as the early season leader. Good win's claimed their first win with a 2-1 win over Optimist. Little League American Legion came from behind to claim a 6-5 win over Fisher. Chris Wil liams and Alex Bond locked up in a pitching duel with first place on the line. McCrory's and Westover each posted their first win while National Guard, Good win's and the Ruritans split games. League standings (as of 6/24/89): American Legion, 5 0; Fisher Nut, 4-1; National Guard, 3-2; Goodwin's, 2-3; Hardees, 2-3; Ruritans, 2-3; McCrory's, 1-4; and West over, 1-4. Midget League The Tigers’ arid "Bears top"** the Midget League standings each sporting records of 2-0. Ryan Westbrook and Michael Smith led the Tiger charges over the Lions while Travis Patrick scored three runs in the Bears’ win over the Elks. T-Ball League After an opening week of rain, all T-Ball teams played this week. The Robins bobbed past the Falcons. The Jays flew past the Hawks and the Cards topped the Eagles. Jami Noble and Amanda Copeland led the Robins' scorers to a 21 8 win over the Falcons. Courtney Bass scored three runs to lead the Cards to a 16 15 win over the Eagles. Issac "Ike" Voliva, 86, of \ Miami, Florida, died Mon , day, June 19 following a brief ' illness. He was a resident of thf Veterans Retirement Vil lage in Miami, and the wid ower of Eva Basnight Voliva. A native of Virginia Beach, Voliva lived in Eden ton for 35 years. He was a re tired employee of the Edenton Cotton Mills and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include: one son - Billy M. Voliva of Miami, Fla.; one sister - Babe Voliva of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother - Henry Voliva of Elisabeth City; and two grandchildren. , A funeral service was con ducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 23, at the Palms Memo rial Chapel in Homestead, Fla. Palms Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of ar rangements. James E Evans James Elton "Bucket" Evans, 71, of Route 3, Eden ton, died June 20 in Chowan Hos pital. A native of Chowan County, he was the son of Sarah Elizabeth Boyce Evans of Winfall, and the late George Walter Evans. He was the husband of Mrs. Willie Marie Casper Evans. Evans was a retired em ployee of the N.C. Department of Transportation, and a Bap tist. Other survivors include: two daughters • Faye Ssftun and Tina Harrell, both of; Edenton; four sons - Ray Evans of Orlando, Fla., Mar shall Evans of Edenton, Cla rence Evans of Merry Hill and Linwood Evans, of Ply mouth; three sisters - Bella Elliott of Winfall, Letha Pierce of Elizabeth City and Gloria Voigt of Edenton; one brother - Horace Evans of Daytona Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. : XJ A funeral service was con ducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 23 in the Williford Barham Funeral Chapel with the Rev.
