Chowan Herald's Mailbag Question Raised Dear Editor, I appreciate your letting my record stand last week. After all, your Jim Wright did call for both parties to end the hor rible partisanship in his res ignation speech. But, Mr. Editor, it seems as though you just can't accept the fact that about a month ago the most powerful official in the Capitol Building, a Demo crat, left office on 69 charges of unethical behavior. Last week you seemed to shift blame from the Republicans in the House to Lee Atwater, the chairman of the Republi can Party. Mr. Editor, Lee Atwater's "sleeze politics" are only allegations, and, if true, I would not support ei ther. He has not yet been charged or found guilty of unethical behavior. My question to you this week, however, requires some comparison. How can you compare the conduct of House Speaker Jim Wright, the highest elected official in the Legislative Branch, to Lee Atwater, a hired employee of the Republican Party? Mr. Editor, which Republi can will you try to attack next week? R. Harris Vaughan, III Edenton Editor's Reply From the Editor, Dear Mr. Vaughan, Let's just call the roll of high office holders who in re cent years have been accused of improper conduct: Democratic: Rep. James Wright, Spea ker of the U.S. House of Representatives, resigned un der charges involving some 69 allegations of unethical conduct. Rep. Tony Coehlo, house majority whip, resigned to escape charge of unethical conduct. Rep. William Gray, new house majority whip, who is under some suspicion but has been charged with nothing as yet. Republican; Richard Nixon, President of the United States, resigned to escape impeachment Spiro Agnew, Vice Presi dent of the United States, re signed to escape criminal charges. John Mitchell, U.S. Attor ney General, sent to prison for Si attempting to obstruct justice. Robert McFarlane, ex-Na-% tional Security Advisor, pleaded guilty of lying to Congress. Ex-Rep. Pat Swindall of Georgia, convicted of lying to a grand jury while in % Congress. Found guilty on 18 or 20 counts. Rep. Donald Lukens of Ohio, convicted of immoral conduct with a 16-year-old girl. Case is pending before House Ethics committee. Rep. Newt Gingrich of Georgia, unethical conduct charges pending before House Ethics committee. In addition the Washing ton Post recently published a list of 109 Reagan appointees who have been "under inves tigation or accused of im proper conduct." They in clude a former postmaster general, accused of less than arm's-length dealing with contractors; several Defense Department deputies, some of whom are accused of accept ing bribes; EPA administra tors, some of whom are in jail; Reagan White House staff members, some of whom are serving time. The list is simply too long to run. And I haven't yet come to HUD. So, I will make you this proposition, Mr. Vaughan. I will apologize for my side if you will apologize for yours. Sincerely, J. P. Huskins Concern Expressed Dear Editor: I was greatly upset and ap palled at the ruling of the Supreme Court, stating that it was not against the law to burn the American flag dur ing a non-violent protest. Is there nothing left in the United States that is to be hon ored and held in great esteem anymore? Are such protestors so un intelligent or unresourceful that they cannot express their opinions and views without desecrating the American flag? Surely they cannot be unaware of the military per sonnel that fought so hard to preserve the freedoms we all so abundantly enjoy. But, far worse than a protestor wishing to desecrate our flag, is the decision of the five Supreme Court Justices that would allow this. They are: Antonin Scalia, Anthony M. Kennedy, William J. Brennan Jr., Thurgood Mar » FREE HEARING TEST Provided By Williamston Hearing Aid Services Anyone who has trouble hearing or understanding words dearly is welcome to have a hearing test with modem equip ment to determine if his is one which may be helped. » Monday, July 3rd at 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. I at the Chowan County Senior Citizen Center 101 Court Street - Edenton - 482-7748 "Rock and Roll" with the Edenton Jaycees and the She Said Band Monday, July 3rd, 1989 from 9 p.m. til 1 a.m. $5.00 per person i at the Jaycee Building I.D.
