DOWNUM, JR = PTOMETRIST - unless the six external mus cles that control each eye are directing them to the same tar get, the perception of depth U greatly reduced in our 3-D world. Seeing primarily length and width makes it“ difficult for a young child to place a peg in a hole, a seamstress to thread a needle, or a driver to park a car. Causes of depth perception deficiencies are varied. Usually one eye is not functioning be cause the eye muscles are unco- c ordinated; or — in older people — a cataract may be closing off ’ . the vision in one eye. After a thorough eye exami nation, the optometrist may be able to prescribe vision train ing to help coordinate the eye muscles so they work as a team. ■lasses may be prescribed, too, > help align the two eyes. This ■ill improve depth perception. If a cataract is responsible ar blocking off the vision to ne eye, it should be dealt with romptly. The cataract will be smoved and a contact lens or nplant will be inserted to re lace the opaque lens that was locking vision. At any age, there are several ■ays to let you enjoy our 3-D ■orld of length, width and epth. Brought to you as a community service by: Dr. A.F. Downum 103 W. Eden Street Edenton, N.C. 482-3218 »
