DOWNUM, JR.= - OPTOMETRIST - PROTECTING AGAINST CATARACTS Sooner or later, if they live long enough, everyone will get cataracts, the cloud ing of the natural lens over the eye. In most cases, cataracts are part of the nor mal aging process and slowly the lens is less able to focus light to help us see. To some extent, it is pos sible to protect against cata racts, or at least to delay their appearance. Basic: wear sun glasses outdoors to protect against ultraviolet light. Stop smoking; smokers are more susceptible to cataracts than non-smokers. Recent studies indicate that good nutrition and adequate levels of L of vitamin C and E also can help to prevent cataracts. If your vision has gotten worse over a period of time, if colors do not seem as bright as they used to be, or if you notice glare from lights at night, these may be symptoms of a developing cataract. But there may be rio symptoms at all, so regular eye examinations are rec ommended. Brought to you as a community service by: Dr. A.F. Downum 103 W. "It is time for performance, not promise; full partnership, full participation; action and co operation in this decade of the nineties." Ms. Oaken issued this challenge to BPW/NC: If the Kentucky Wildcats lose a basketball game to Duke, Wake Forest, or NC State, Kentucky will host a wine and cheese party for North Carolina at the National Convention in Reno, Nevada this July. 'We expect North Carolina to host the party if Kentucky wins," she said.
