Carolina Telephone Plans Major Construction In '94 Sprint - Carolina Tele phone's 1994 construction plan calls for spending $40,000 in the Edenton area to serve its customers through a new long-distance fiber-optic cable. The new fiber-optic route will run between Edenton and Hertford, and will begin ser vice ifi June. Customers in the Edenton exchange have telephone numbers that begin with the "482-" prefix. "We have nearly $1.6 bil lion invested in equipment and facilities in eastern and central North Carolina," said Charlotte Clark, Sprint - Car olina Telephone's area com munity relations manager. "To continue t) meet the gro wing communications needs of our customers, we will spend approximately $143 million for construction this year." i More than half of that mo ney will provide for growth. The company expects to add approximately 37,450 custo mer service lines this year. The rest of the construction budget is for replacement and modernization of equipment and facilities. During the year, Sprint - Carolina Telephone plans to spend about $15 million for long-distance facilities, in cluding more than $3.5 mil lion for the construction of 12 major interexchange fiber optic routes to handle long distance calls, including the Edenton-to-Hertford route. Fiber-optic technology is the most advanced means of telecommunications trans mission, Clark noted. It uses lasers to transmit data, voice and video information over hair-thin glass fibers. One pair of glass fibers c^n trans mit 32,000 telephon^ conver sations simultaneously. \aoA -^•ewe _—__—. * «*■ JJW * at LEE s CLOTHING OUTLET 4,000 Plus New Articles at XXX-TRA Low Prices Sleepwear, Kids Clothes, Juniors and Ladies This Saturday, March 5th — 7 to 4 Small’s Crossroads Hwy. 32 — 14 Miles North of Edenton MUST HAVE THIS AD FOR AN EXTRA 10% OFF Cadi l l a c C r e at i ng A Higher Standard 1994 ELDORADO Sporty performance & complete luxury.
