New interactive Website geared
to students, parents, and teachers
Teachers and parents look
ing for ways to make science
relevant and interesting to
teen-agers should check out
Science Junction, an award
winning new Web site from The
Science House and the College
of Education and Psychology
at North Carolina State Uni
versity.
The site features dozens of
hands-on experiments and
learning activities, lesson plans
and interactive resource ma
terials for teaching and learn
ing about science at home and
n the classroom.
It's located at: http://
www.ncsu.edu/
sciencejunction/.
All learning materials on Sci
ence Junction are developed in
cooperation with middle-school
and high-school science teach
ers and are pre-tested on stu
dents in grades 6-12 before
being loaded onto the site. Only
those that have been proven to
hold students' interest and have
won teachers' seals of approval
are included, says Dr. John C.
Park, associate professor' of
mathematics andscience edu
cation at N.C. State.
New lesson plans, activities
and Internet resources are
added to the site every month.
They are designed to fit into
the state's middle and second
ary science curricula and are
based on the goals of the Na
tional Science Education Stan
Elec, linemen
able to earn
college degrees
RALEIGH — North Carolina
Association of Electric Coop
eratives (NCAEC) and the
North Carolina Community
College System have joined
together to offer a unique pro
gram that will provide on-the
job training and a college de
gree for the cooperatives' elec
tric linemen.
This joint venture will allow
linemen to earn an associate
degree in their field of Electric
Lineman Technology and gain
expertise in the rapidly-ex
panding technology of their
work environment.
The program is one of the
first in thenation and has been i
uder developement for three
years. This year, approxi
mately 85 electric cooperative
lineman hae enrolled at Nash
Community College to earn this
degree.
In the two years it takes to
complete the program, linemen
will oain rA wpll-rnnnripri prill
cation from courses that cover
safety codes, line construction,
and energy management, as
well as core subjects such as
advanced math, English, and
computer science. These
courses add up to 64 hours of
credit, some of which involve
on-the-job training and first aid
skills.
Tommy Greer, director of
job training and safety for
NCAEC, said,"The degree will
benefit the lineman, the co-op,
and the consumer by enhanc
ing the lineman's safety, tech
nical and communication skills.
And with changes coming in
the utilities industry, it will pay
off to have highly-trained em
ployees."
All but three of the technical
courses must be completed at
Nash Community College, but
19 other community colleges
across the state have collabo
rated to offer the remainder of
the courses. They are: Halifax,
Haywood, Isothermal,
Mitchell, Tri-County, Western
Piedmont, Alamance, Wilkes,
Piedmont, Anson, Central,
James Sprunt, Beaugort,
Pamlico, Surry, Sampson,
Durham Tech, aryl Randolph.

"The goal of Science Junc
tion is to forge stronger con
nections between educators at
N.C. State and the teachers,
children and parents of our
state, so that together we can
promote interest in science and
provide resources for promot
ing high standards in the class
room," Park said.
From Science Junction's
homepage, visitors can link to
six internal sites:
Data Depot features experi
ments and data sets designed
for use in collaborative experi
ments between classes or
schools, or for use by individual
students and their parents. Stu
dents can use the data to con
duct studies on a wide range of
topics, from North Carolina
water quality to solar eclipses.
Teacher Terminal offers in
teractive lesson plans and
Internet resources for teach
ers and parents. In one lesson
plan, Carolina Coatal Science,
students can investigate the
natural and man-made forces
affecting the fate of the con
troversial Shell Island Resort,
then debate the future of this
and other oceanfront struc
tures threatened by coastal
erosion. Since going online in
late spring, this site has gar
nered five awards, including
being name a Teacher's Choice
r
selection by the Well-Con
nected Educator.
Student Station features
hands-on home experiments
students in grades 6-12 can try.
Or students can link into the
Game Room for science-based
interactive computer games.
Other links lead to Commu
nications Bridge, which pro
vides ways for teachers to get
in touch with each other and
conduct statewide collabora
tive experiments; Upgrade
Route, which offers resources
for teachrs' professional devel
opment; and NC State Fron
tiers, which highlights current
research at the university.
Science Junction is a collabo
rative project of NC State's
Science House and the College
of Education and Psychology.
Park and Dr. David C. Haase,
director of The Science House,
serve as project leaders. The
16-campus University of North
Carolina system has selected
Science Junction as its official
website for outreach to NC sci
ence teachrs, and has listed it
as a link on UNC-TV's Learn
ing Links site.
The Science House is NC
State's learning outreach pro
gram for K-12 teachers and
students. Each year, its hands-,
on programs, teacher training
workshops and other activities
reach more than 20,000 stu
dents and teachers statewide.

What you
don’t know
about
heart disease
may kill you.
Most women don’t
know that aging, as well
as smoking, diet and life
style, can dramatically
increase their risk of
heart disease.
Every year, an estimat
ed half a million women
past 45 will have a heart
attack. Nearly half of
them will die. Making it
the number one killer of
women in America today.
But it doesn’t have to
be. If women would only
speak to their doctors,
there's a good chance
heart disease could be
prevented.
What you don’t know
about heart disease may
kill you. But what you do
know may save you.
