He encouraged local membership committees to set goals and strategies for recruit ing new members. He encour aged the group to recruit from the area’s pool of retired school personnel who are not cur rently members of the organi zation. NCRSP lobbyists have worked to ensure the passage of a 2.5 percent for the state’s school personnel. The local unit of Retired School Personnel meets the second Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. Chowan College will freeze its tuition, fees for 1999-2000 Dr. Stanley Lott, President of Chowan College, Murfreesboro, NC, has an nounced that tuition, housing, and activity fees will remain frozen at their current rate through the next academic year. The timing of Lott’s an nouncement, made before a gathering of trustees, staff, students, parents and friends of the college, was intended to be early enough to help pro spective and returning stu dents at the college make firm plans for next year. Lott cited a long list of inno vations and new program of ferings that the college has put into place in recent years, in cluding returning to the college’s former status as a four-year institution; network ing the campus and outfitting it with up-to-date computers and other cutting-edge techno logical equipment; adding ma jors in biology and criminal justice, a concentration in en vironmental science, and mi nors in communication and drama; increasing the number of faculty; automating the li brary system; creating the Cen ter for Ethics to bring speak ers addressing ethical issues to campus and to foster discus sion and exploration of ethical issues; and opening the Con tinuing Education Regional Technology Center to offer computer training to busi nesses and community mem bers. Taking to heart College Board President Donald Stewart’s recommendation in his address to the National Press Club earlier this fall, Chowan College has opted to “hold the line on rising prices” to help ease the burden of fami lies whose incomes may not have increased at a rate that kept pace With the rising cost of higher education. Both the College Board and the National Commission on the Cost of Higher Education issued re ports in 1998 addressing the fact that college tuition and fees have more than doubled in the last 15 years, while the median family income has in creased by only about 12 per cent. “These reports remind us that it’s vital to our future as a college for private higher edu cation to remain affordable and accessible to families...We have heard clearly families’ concerns about the burden placed on them by annual cost increases,” Lott told the crbwd.
