OBITUARIES /funerals, cards of thanks LOUISE F. BOONE GATES, NC - Louise Fore hand Boone, of Rt. 1, Gates, NC, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, in her home. Mrs. Boone was born in Chowan County. The daughter of the late Fate and Mrs. Nora McClenney Forehand, she was a homemaker and had formerly worked at the Gates County Pharmacy. She was a member of Kittrell’s United Methodist Church and had served in many capacities in the church, in cluding president of the Women’s Missionary Society and president of the Adult La dies’ Sunday School class. Mrs. Boone for many years was active in the extension ser vice and had served as presi dent of the Gates Home Dem onstration Club. Preceded in death by her first husband, John A. Lane, Sr., she is survived by her second hus band, William J. Boone; two daughters, Peggy Lane Temple of Gatesville, NC and Faye Lane Freeman of Gates; two sons, J. Roger Lane and his wife, Rita, of Gates, and John A. Lane, Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Gatesville; three sisters, Marie Anderson of Hertford, NC, Katie Nixon of Edenton, and Margaret Cansler of Texas; a brother, Roy Forehand of Edenton; eight grandchildren, Sarah Lane Temple Adams and her husband, John, Edmund Randolph Temple, Jr. and his wife, Allison, John R. Lane, Jr. and his wife, Kellie, Bundy H. Lane and his wife, Marinda, Curk T. Lane and his wife, Lisa, Jason D. Lane, Adam P. Lane and Virginia Ray Freeman four greaat-grandchildren, Madison Adams, Lane Eliza beth Adams, Carson T. Lane and John Roger Lane, III. Also surviving are her husband’s children and their families: Chester Boone of Emporia, VA, Edna Eason of Raleigh, and Robert Boone of Raleigh. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, in Kittrell’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Altman and the Rev. Billy Presley officating. Burial fol lowed in the Gatesville Cem etery. Memorial donations may be made to Kittrell’s United Meth odist Church, Gates, NC 27937. Miller Funeral Home in Gatesville, NC was in charge of arrangements. JESSIE M. COSTON VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Jessie Mae Coston, 56, of 5862 N. Hampton Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA, died Nov. 5 at Leigh Memorial Hospital. A native of Chowan County, she was the daughter of Lucille Leary of Edenton and the wife of William F. Coston. She was a homemaker and a member of the Healing Temple Church in Norfolk, VA. Survivors include: four daughters, Naomi Coston and Delores Floyd of Virginia Beach, VA and Lorraine O’Bannard and Carolyn White of Norfolk, VA; two sons, Marvin Coston of Virginia Beach, VA and William Coston of Norfolk, VA; three brothers, Julius Leary of Edenton, Randy Leary of Philadelphia, PA and William “Junie” Leary of Ra leigh, NC; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Center Hill Baptist Church in Tyner with burial following in the church cemetery. Blair Funeral Service in Edenton was in charge of ar rangements. Fall Festival a big hit at Lawrence Academy . Large crowds turns out for Oct. 17 pig picking at the school which included face painting, Isabelle the Clown, karaoke, sack races and live entertainment from local duo, Doctor/Doctor Merry Hill — Area families enjoyed an afternoon of sun • ancf fun at the Lawrence Acad emy Fall Festival on Oct. 17. The Parent-Teacher Organiza tion tried a new format for their fall fund-raiser this year, and found a winner in a family pig picking. The Windsor Cook Club pre pared a delicious pork barbe cue dinner, which followed the afternoon activities. Events included a DJ, karaoke with Don Evans, Isabelle the Clown, hayrides, face painting, sack races, and specialty booths. The background music and comfortable seating allowed the large crowd to stay and enjoy the sunny day. The Lovin’ Oven and Salmon Creek Nursery provided sea sonal items for sale. During the supper hour, en tertainment was provided by Doctor/Doctor, Lawrence Academy parents Dr. Peter Boehling and Dr. Paul Rich mond. She was the wife of Roosevelt Ford. Besides her husband, survi vors include: a son, Theodore R. Ford of Newport, NO;'a daughter, Roberta White of Edenton; and four grandchil dren. A funeral service was held at Ryan’s Grove Baptist Church in Edenton on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Blair Funeral Service in Edenton was in charge of ar rangements. Swicegood tapped as hospital's top employee Every three months, Debbie Swicegood casts her vote for the "Employee of the Quarter" as part of her duties as Chowan Hospital's Human Resources Director. Debbie didn't get a chance to vote this past quarter, however, because her name had been submitted as one of the many qualified candidates. Obvi ously, Debbie' would have to disqualify herself, so instead, she was informed her voting duties would be alternated with a member of the administra tive staff, starting last month. When the votes were tabu lated, the 11-year veteran of Chowan Hospital received the majority of the votes and was named "Employee of the Quar ter" for the months of October through December. "I was very honored, and I was totally shocked," Swicegod said upon hearing her name announced. "It's been really busy the past couple of months in my department with all the employee benefit changes that accompany the lease agree ment with Pitt County Memo rial Hospital. This honor really boosts my morale. It never oc curred to me," she added, "that someone would nominate me. I didn't even think I was eligible. On Debbie's nominating sheet, it notes that she is a very dedicated person. She always has a positive attitude and is willing to help whenever she can. As the hospital's Human Resources Director, Debbie has many responsibilities, in cluding keeping the hospital administration abreast of cur rent employment laws, such as family leave and the American Disabilities Act. Debbie does employee re cruiting and completes the hir ing process for all new em ployees. Additionally, she di rects the benefits as well as the wage and salary policies. She is also responsible for adver tising all current job openings, as well as staying aware of the Joint Commission guidelines as they apply to Human fte sources. The Edenton native is a John A. Holmes and Meredith Col lege graduate, with a bachelor's degree in Business and Eco nomics. Debbie and her hus band, Jay, have three sons, Ja son, Matt and Brian.
