Outgoing members of the Chowan Regional Health Care Foundation honore include: Joe James, Ralph Cole, Allen Hornthal, and George Jones. Feb. 1 is deadline to apply for Arts grants The North Carolina Arts Council is calling for profes1 sional artists and companies that conduct arts programs to apply to be included in the 2000-2001 North Carolina Touring Artist Directory. The directory is distributed as a resource tool to organi zations that hire artists. Ap plications for artists and com panies to be included in the directory must be received in the Council office by 5 p.m. on Feb. 1. Contact Vicki Vitiello at (919) 733-7897, ex I tension 26, for an application. Artists in all disciplines who perform their work for audi ences and/or work in resi dency settings are eligible to apply. This includes musi cians, dancers, theater art ists, folk artists, literary art ists, visual artists and media artists. Performing arts groups (such as dance and theater companies, sympho nies, etc.) may also apply. Artists and companies must be willing to tour throughout the state. Applications will be re viewed by a panel made up of in-state professionals se lected for their expertise in a particular discipline or their experience in presenting per formances and residency ac tivities. The following crite ria are used in reviewing ap plications: artistic quality, successful performing and touring history or residency experience, strong communi cation and interpersonal skills and educational value of program and quality of teaching materials, if appli cable. The NC Arts Council is a division of the NC Depart ment of Cultural Resources. Its mission is to enrich the cultural life of the state by nurturing and supporting ex cellence in the arts and by providing opportunities for every North Carolinian to experience the arts. The coun cil has been a catalyst for the development of arts organi zation and facilities through out the state by making grants and offering technical assis tance for over 30 years. Outgoing foundation board gets recognition Six outgoing members of the Board of Directors for Chowan Regional Health Care Founda tion (formerly Chowan Hospi tal Foundation) were honored with a presentation of special plaques commemorating their service during the December meeting. They were: • Joe James, retired hospital administrator, and a founding member of the board in 1992; • Ralph Cole, principal at D.F. Walker Elementary School and a founding member of the board in 1992. Cole also served as secretary of the corporation for the past four years; • Allen Hornthal, retired den tist, who served as foundation phairman for the past four years. Hornthal was a found ing board member in 1992; ! • George Jones, the Chowan County Commissioners' repre sentative, and a founding mem ber of the board in 1992. • Harry Gard, retired agribusiness executive; ; • Shirley Perry, Perquimans County representative. Gard and Perry also were founding members of the board in 1992. ; The foundation is authorized tjo aomprise a total of 24 mem bers. The names of the incom ing board members filling these vacancies will be an riounced at the February board meeting. National Guard Day proclaimed Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr. has proclaimed Sunday, Dec. 13, as “National Guard Day” in North Carolina. This procla mation commemorates the 362nd anniversary of the founding of the National Guard and recognizes the dedicated service of the mem bers of the North Carolina Army and Air National Guard. Hunt said, “I encourage all citizens of this great state to thank the men and women of the North Carolina National Guard for their dedicated public service. These fine in dividuals continue to protect and defend our state and na tion and stand ready to assist in times of local and state di sasters.” Major General Gerald A. Rudisill, Jr., the Adjutant General, commands nearly 121,000 members of the North Carolina Army and Air Na tiqnal Guard. Army and Air Guard units are located in 99 armories throughout 75 coun ties in North Carolina. Rudisill said, , “This is an other great day for our orga nisation, and I am extremely proud of these fine soldiers and airmen who are visible mdmbers of our communities.
