The ranking is based on the v number of dealer-owned and - v operated outlets. The 1998 list is the 15th annual ranking the newspaper has published, and at 75 dealerships, the largest list ever compiled. The 75 com panies listed operate more than 5,300 outlets, and account for more than $4.5 billion in sales of tires, wheels and automo tive service. The average dealership operates 72 stores and reports more than $80 mil lion in annual retail sales. The size of the dealers singled out in this study re flects the changing face of the tire dealer. L,ong vieweu as primarily local, hometown businesses, independently owned tire dealerships are growing into major enterprises with hundreds of outlets, thou sands of employees and hun dreds of millions of dollars in sales. All told, it’s estimated there are more than 39,000 retail out lets across the U.S. selling tires. Independent tire dealerships - as opposed to tire company owned stores, mass merchan disers or wholesale clubs - ac count for approximately 55-60 percent of all retail passenger car and light truck tire sales and therefore represent the single largest channel of dis tribution. Published 25 times a year by Crain Communications, Inc., Tire Business is dedicated to covering the tire distribution and related automotive service industries. Company honors employees The George C.
