Tour Continued From Page 3-A home last year. The 98-year old house was originally owned by Edenton Cotton Mill man ager H.C. Privott, who pur chased 20,000 bricks for its construction. Greene said she is hoping that visitors will find the home’s interior woodwork and spa cious design to be an interest ing addition to the tour. “I’m looking forward to people’s reactions,” said Greene, who will open five first-floor rooms during the tour. “We are lucky to own this home, and I want to share it with others because it is so beautiful.” The Greenes’ home will be decorated with pink poinset tias, eucalyptus, and paper whites (narcissus), while the Christmas tree will contain Victorian ornaments, also in pink tones. But Mrs. Greene' said she would wait until the last minute to put up many of the live decorations. “It’s tough to decorate now because of the warm weather,” she said Monday afternoon as temperatures climbed to near 80 degrees. Ginny Culpepper, site man ager for The Barker House in downtown Edenton, said that ticket sales have been brisk. “We’ve had a lot of advance ticket sales and a number of groups have already bought tickets as well,” Culpepper said. Tickets are $18 each for the tour sponsored by the Edenton Historical Commission. Events coinciding with the tour include: Barker House Holiday Repast, Cupola House Wassail Bowl, Iredell House Groaning Board, and Chowan Arts Council’s Confection Per fection. All these events are free, and will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. * Caroling on the Green will take place at the old Chowan County Courthouse Green on Friday evening, from 6-7 p.m. Parking for the tour will be available near the Edenton Cotton Mill - lpcated at the in tersection of East King and McMullan Streets - on the mill’s old ballfield. Visitors should look for the luminaries placed in front of the homes which will be par ticipating in this year’s Chfist mas Candlelight Tour. Other homes on the tour in clude: (Mill Village) home of Mr. and Mr. John Becker; Ms. Elizabeth B. Smith; Mr. David McVaiigh; Mr. and Mrs. Rick Ebersol; Mr. Vic Alexander; ^Ms. Katherine Arnott; the home of Rhonda Bates and Wes Lassiter; Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Rudd; Mr. Ben Speller; (South Oakum Street) Mr. and Mrs. Randy Hollowell; (East King Street) Mr. and Mrs. Bill Greer; and the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Mason. Home Continued From Page 1-A Assembly placed a morato rium on nursing-home con struction - due, in part, to the excessive numbers of new fa cilities, said Harper - but South ern Assisted Living (SAL) has an exemption to construct a 50-bed facility. Harper asked the commissioners .to adopt a resolution stating that the county approves of SAL’s plans to build a 72-bed facility in Chowan County. “Our industry is an industry that is growing very rapidly, and that’s the reason for the moratorium legislation,” said Harper. “I’m here to get that exemption increased to make the facility economically fea sible.” The final decision on SAL’s plan to build a facility here will be decided by the state Department of Human Re sources, Harper said. If ap proved, the facility would most likely be named Carolina House, the marketing name of SAL’s adult-care communities. Harper said that his company currently operates eight as sisted-living facilities across the state, and plans to operate 22 facilities in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia by the year 2000. - Harper said that he con ducted a study in which there was an evident need for an other nursing home in Chowan County. In addition, he said his company currently has the pro posed site under contract. “It will be a worthwhile project,” said DSS Director Ben Rose. “We have two facili ties like this in Chowan County now... and those places may be full... this would open up more resources for the families to keep their loved-ones near home instead of sending them across the state.” The proposed $3 million fa cility will also bring in approxi mately $25,000 in annual tax revenues to the county. But 10 to 30 percent of Carolina House patients require payment as sistance (Special Assistance to Adults) from local govern ments. Chowan County Man ager Cliff Copeland said the tradeoff would still financially benefit the county. “I think that (assistance fund ing) will be more than offset by the fact that it (facility) will create 42 full-time jobs,” said Copeland. Plans are to construct a four wing facility, Harper said. Two wings would provide space for the light care patients, with one wing each for ambulatory-im paired and Alzheimer patients, he said. Harper said that each Carolina House facility pro vides optimum care and daily activities for its patients. The monthly cost for patients runs from $1,750 per month for light care patients, to nearly $3,000 for Alzheimer patients, he said.
