TEACHER NAMED TURKEY OF THE MONTH By an overwhelming majority, students at Chowan Middle School voted to elect Joy Denton as the teacher representative for the Turkey of the Month honor in November. Turkey of the Month is a project that raises money for the local food pantry and the school for team projects. The Turkey of the Month project works like this: Teachers’ names were written on hand-drawn turkey bodies that were posted on a bulletin board outside the school office. Students purchased feathers (at a cost of one cent each) for the teacher/turkey of their choice. Denton received the most feathers and was given a Turkey of the Month t-shirt and a frozen turkey. The project raised approximately $275. After the tours, the students teachers and parents had ; deeper understand and appre ciation for all the effort tha goes into farming. They now know that food doesn't jus come from a grocery store...i all begins on a farm.
