Parker Women’s Club building to pro vide a more intimate setting for the dozens who attend the annual event, she said. Festivities will include live musical entertainment by Fred Hill (jazz- and blues-guitar ren ditions), dancing by the chil dren of Gwen Brown, story telling by Naomi White, a mod ern ballet dance by Tamia Bembry, and opening prayer by Dr. Johnny Houston of Eliza beth City State University. After Houston’s prayer, lo cal children will recite Kwanzaa’s principles. “My grandchildren will do the Kwanzaa pledge,” Vanterpool said, adding that her children, along with nephew Donovan Hill, will also recite parts of the Nguzo Saba. Local youth will also recite poetry during the event. A potluck dinner will follow, and Vanterpool said partici pants are asked to bring one dish each - but none containing pork, please. When the evening’s events are over, Vanterpool said that Kwanzaa’s values should not fade away. “We want people to celebrate the principles all during the year and make them a part of daily living,” she said. Vanterpool also acknowl edged those local businesses that have helped to sponsor this year’s holiday. They include: Blair Funeral Service, Rowsom Funeral Service, Harrell’s Community Grocery, LaDall Inc., Carter’s Barber Shop, Keystone Barber Shop, Para dise Beauty Salon, Flemming’s Beauty Salon, and Miji’s vari ety store.
