Perry: Community support made MLK event possible When more than 200 local residents crowed into Swain Auditorium earlier this month, they were gathered to cel ebrate Mai'tin Luther King, Jr. Day. The chairman of the MLK Day Committe, Jerald Perry, said that the event went off .without a hitch on Jan. 18 as a result of a community-wide ef fort to make the hour-long cer emony entertaining and en lightening. "On behalf of the organiza tional committee for last this month's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration held at Swain Auditorium," Perry said. "I would like to thank all of the participants in guests in mak ing the event a pleasurable suc cess for all involved." The audience was treated to a moving speech from state Director of Personnel Ron Penny. Perry commended Penny for giving a heartfelt address to Edenton and Chowan County residents. But Perry, who also serves on the Edenton Town Council and is a pastor at an Edenton church, said that the entertain ment for this year's event also' signified a spirit of together ness in the local community. "Special thanks goes to Loretta Glenn and Verlon Jones, and the mass choir par ticipants - they were fantas tic," said Perry. "Thanks also goes to Sambo Dixon for all of his work with the MLK Com mittee. "Also, thanks goes out to the Chowan Arts Council staff for preparing such good and whole some refreshments which were served after the program." Read the Chowan Herald weekly and stay informed!
