He added, “Edenton’s his toric district is not going to get any larger anytime soon, and there is simply nothing like this property, nor is there ever likely to be in any of our life times. Increasingly, people want convenience, quality, and affordability without the bother of maintaining a home. The Cotton Mill is all this and more.” When PNC acquired the Edenton Cotton Mill and the Mill Village in 1995, it made a commitment to the community that a certain portion of the Mill proper would remain avail able for public use. Relay Continued From Page 1-A At the time her cancer oc curred, Partin said, “I told myself I was too busy to stop what I was doing, and wasn’t that that foolish, because it al most cost me my life.” Because she waited to seek treatment, Partin said, her ini tial prognosis was grim. She was not expected to live be cause the tumor in her body had continued to grow. “Please be alert to your body. Heed the warning signs and respond appropriately,” she said. “No one believes in educa tion more than I do,” Partin said as she encouraged Relay volunteers to spread the mes sage among their friends, co workers and families that they, too, need to educate themselves about cancer, and also to sup port efforts like the Relay to raise funds for research and more educational initiatives. Partin said she was clearly one of the lucky ones. And, shd added, with more funds for treatment and education, the odds of survival for others will continue to climb. “I imagine everyone here knows someone who has had cancer, and some who have died. One in three people will have cancer; the good news is that more than half of those diagnosed will survive,” she said. “I just couldn’t believe the level of commitment that those volunteers sustained over a 24 hour period,” she said. Partin said that these days, she takes a much more active interest in her health. “I have never been as healthy and as conscious of what I put in my body as I am today,” she said. She added that while she doesn’t always get her “5 A Day” (the number of servings of fruits and vegetables that medical experts recommend eating each day to protect against cancer), she does make the effort. Partin added, “Some day we may not have? to talk about this or have these Relays, but right now you’re doing an incredible job, and I salute you for it.” The local Relay for Life is scheduled to take place in May at the John A. Holmes High School Athletic Complex in Edenton. Anyone interested in participating is urged to con tact Dawn Hare at 482-3218. Call the classifieds! Haste recalls fun of past Pilgrimage here BY SEAN JACKSON Staff Writer For one former Edenton resi dent, the inaugural Pilgrimage to town and county homes con tained one unforgettable'ele ment: the opportunity to drive a group of guests to the sites on the tour. The only hitch was, he was just 15 years old. “We walked out to the car and they handed me the keys,” said Erie Haste, a guide on the 1949 Edenton Pilgrimage tour. “I did not hesitate. I jumped behind the wheel and took off. I drove all day long with no license.” Haste, who now lives in Hertford and owns a hardware store there, said that the op portunity to tool around Edenton and Chowan County was the chance of a lifetime for a 15-year-old. He and the visitors he was assigned to es cort had nothing but fun dur ing the tour, said Haste. “I was not arrested,” said Haste jokingly. “It was just a real good tour. We met at what was the Joseph Hewes Hotel (now the Chown County Office Building) and each guide was given places to take each Erie Haste group.” Although it has been nearly 50 years since Haste had his adventure on the first Pilgrim age, he said that the success of that tour spawned the follow ing tours, including the 50th Anniversary Pilgrimage slated for April 16-17. Haste said that the current tour should be even more ap pealing to visitors. “A lot of things have been restored that were not there (for the Pilgrimage) in 1949,” he said. “People prepared their See HASTE Oh Page 10-A TAYLOR TWIN CINEMA Downtown Historic Edenton 482-2676 for showtimes THURSDAY IS LAST DAY FOR . . .
