DOWNUM, JR. - OPTOMETRIST - SEEING AND SKIING In winter, the sun is lower in the sky and starts to set much earlier. It's harder to see clearly, even with perfect vi sion. and any visual defect can be exaggerated by poor light. Skiers need goggles to cope with the varying light condi • tions on the slopes and to pro tect the eyes from ultraviolet rays. Some goggles have inter changeable lenses of various tints: darker ones to be worn when the sun is strong, lighter ones to let in more of the after noon light. Goggles are also available with chromatic lenses that respond to light automatically. Lenses that filter blue light are particularly effective in hazy, foggy or overcast weather conditions. That's when vision is obscured by scattered blue light caused by particles of dust. When the blue light is filtered out, the remaining col ors focus more sharply on the retina. Snowy surroundings are easier to see and safer to ski. brought to you as a community service by: Dr. A.F. Downum 103 W. Five classes from D.F. Walker Elementary School participated on Wednesday, March 24th. Approximately 100 studfents from the classes of Mrs. Biggs, Mrs. Leary, Mrs. Stallings, Mrs. Ellis and Mrs. Williams were hosted by the site. While the students viewed the 14-minute slide presentation in the Visitor Center, staff mem bers of the site hid—not too completely—plas tic eggs filled with Easter candies. The students were accommodated in three separate groups throughout the day. The sec ond group, students in Mrs. Stallings and Mrs. 1 Williams' classes, enjoyed a picnic lunch before engaging in the hunt. Additionally, on Thursday, March 25, nearly 120 second graders from D.F. Walker visited the historic site to participate in Easter egg dyeing. The classes of Mrs. Williams, Mrs. McCall, Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Freshwater learned how dyes made from natural materials were used in the colonial pe riod while the students dyed their eggs. The entire program was organized by Deborah Sliva of the Historic Site staff. "This is but one phase of our ongoing program of providing students with a look at how people lived more than 200 years ago," she explained. 1 r i , - - Ms. Stallings' class lines up to search for their share of Easter goodies.
