[Time for looking back, then moving on (Editor's Note: The Chowan Herald would like to express its appreciation to John A. Holmes High School senior Tif fany Webb who has shared with our readers her thoughts, and those of her classmates, dur ing this past year. This is her final column. She will be missed.) High school is full of varying contradictions. That has made my four years at John A. Holmes High School an end less adventure full of magic carpet rides and valiant sword fights. I've made friends from far off galaxies and had conversa tions with divas and starlets. I've seen my life flash before my eyes. I'm tired. CONTRADICTIONS I hated my band uniform. For four years, I wore the same one with the big tear in the overlay and the sleeves that were tight in the elbows. It took five minutes to get everything off to go to the bathroom. The worst part was that you could see the skin above my socks when I sat down because my pants were a tad too short. I turned my uniform in last Thursday afternoon. I miss it. It may have been yellowing and had holes in the pockets, but it was mine. It stood for some thing: our happiness when we were victorious, and the tears we shed when we weren't. CARPET RIDES AND SWORD FIGHTS Finally getting a driver's li cense has been fun. What teen ager DOESN'T anticipate be ing able to drive circles around McDonald's parking lot? Per sonally, I've been driving 36 miles a day. I can burn half a tank of gas in three days just from going to school. This driv ing habit is more expensive than cigarettes. What's more romantic than a sword fight? Arguing with Teen TALK Tiffany Webb teachers. I've done a lot of that this year, it seems. My grand mother always said that if I behaved in school the way I did at home I wouldn't have any friends. Well, I have lots of friends. They're all just as ar gumentative and sardonic as I am. Thank you, Mr. Karl and Mrs. Chappell for the lively disputes! FRIENDS FROM DISTANT GALAXIES Friendships can be molded out of the most extreme situa tions. My best friend, Sheena, is who I call the "Kindergarten Conspirator." On the very first day of class, I recall her getting her name on the board with two or three checks. Of course, precious little angel that I was, I thought it was funny. This caused me to get my name on the board as well. There wasn't a day that went by that we didn't get-our name on the board for snicker ing during nap time, or carry ing on our five-year-old gossip while we were supposed to be coloring inside the lines. We still gossip now, but in stead of holding a fat crayon, she's gripping the handles in side my car while I try to DRI Ve inside the lines. DIVAS AND STARLETS I've hung out with a very se lective crowd' this year. They all have high goals and lofty expectations. For example, See TIFFANY On Page 12-A Court Continued From Page SrB Thomas's probation may be transferred to Wake County. Thomas also pleaded guilty to possessing an open container • an a public street and was sen tenced to 15 days suspended with 12 months' unsupervised probation (including six months' supervised probation), fined $25 plus court costs, and ordered not to violate any laws. Belinda Dawn Todd, guilty, unsafe movement, assessed court costs. Kenneth Donald Ward, ani mals that are a public nuisance and failure to vaccinate ani mals, prayer for judgment con tinued upon payment of court costs. Ervin Len White, guilty, sec ond degree trespass, sentenced to active 24 hour term to be served beginning at 7 p.m. on May 22. John W. Williams, guilty, misdemeanor probation viola tion, ordered to remit all su pervision fees and court costs; ordered to reimburse restitu tion of $733 by July 19 at 5 p.m. William Williams, guilty, im proper equipment, assessed court, costs. Reginald Wright, guilty, reckless driving, sentenced to 45 days suspended with 12 months' unsupervised proba tion, fined $500 plus court costs, ordered to report for substance abuse assessment within 30 days and provide written veri fication to Chowan Clerk of Court, complete 24 hours of community service within 45 days and pay fees, ordered to pay $100 today and balance by June 4.
