Teacher attends high-tech school at COA John Smith III knows that i will take more than reading writing and arithmetic to pre pare students for the 21st cen tury. The College of th< Albemarle teacher knows hi: students will need one verj important "T" along with th< three R's, and that "T" stand: for technology. Smith was among those wh( recently participated in a high tech summer school to prepare him to teach his students com puter engineering skills through ExplorNet's ComPutei Recycling Program. The CPE Program operates through s vocational course titled Com puter Engineering Technology Smith recently joined 18 high school teachers from across the state for an intensive instruc tor-training program on the campus of Appalachian State University. The two-week ses sions focused on learning how to build, upgrade, and trouble shoot computers. These skills will be passed on to students who enroll this fall in CET classes at College of the Albemarle. "I think this course will give my students a good foundation to move on to networking," said Smith. "Certainly it will lead to higher paying jobs." The Computer Engineering Technology curriculum was developed by ExplorNet and the NC Department of Public Instruction to teach students in rural and low-wealth com munities real world skills. John Smith III was among the teachers attending a recent high-tech workshop designed to prepare him to better teach his students computer engineering skills. Smith was recently hired by College of the Albemarle as a Computer /Network Engineering Technology instructor for COA and the Edenton-Chowan Schools. While students learn to build computers, they will also be preparing for the A+ Certifica tion test. This test is an indus try standard for computer ser vice technicians, and is viewed as a "certificate of employabil ity." Another key benefit of this program is that the computers these students build can be in stalled in computer labs or li braries for other students to use, or anywhere else they are needed within the school dis trict. Smith will teach Computer Engineering Technology and N etworking Engineering T ech nology Certification classes for COA through a partnership with Edenton-Chowan Schools and county government. Smith is a graduate of North Carolina State University in Raleigh where he earned a BS degree in computer engineer ing. He has been employed the last three years as a computer technician with Franklin City Public Schools in Franklin, VA.
