OBITUARIES > /funerals, cards o f thanks JAMES H. CHRIST James Harding Christ, 79, of the 100 block of Blackfoot Trail, Edenton, died Wednesday, Aug. 4 in Chowan Hospital. Mr. Christ was born in Ak ron, OH. The son of the late Charles and Mrs. Anna Vogel Christ, he had retired from the Goodyear Tire Corporation af ter 40 years. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Akron. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Bills Christ; two daughters, Shirley Carter of Newcomerstown, OH and Tracey Jordan of Edenton; a sister, Edna Fodor of Akron; and three grandchildren. A graveside memorial ser vice was held Friday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. in Beaver Hill Cem etery, Edenton. Miller Funeral Home in Gatesville, NC was in charge of arrangements. LOGAN R. ELLIOTT, JR. Logan Rawlinson “Raleigh” Elliott, Jr., 47, of the 100 block of Blount Street, Edenton, died Wednesday, Aug. 4. Mr. Elliott was born in Chowan bounty. He was pre ceded in death by his father, Logan R. Elliott, Sr. and his brother, William O. Elliott. He was a surveyor’s assis tant, and a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Surviving are his mother, Hazel Shaw Elliott; extended family, and many friends. A graveside memorial ser vice was held Monday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cem etery, Edenton, with the Rev. Thomas Rickenbaker and Dr. Kenneth Word officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Edenton-Chowan Rescue Squad or the Dare County Rescue Squad. Gower, Sr., 64, be loved husband, father, grand father and friend, of the 1200 block of Butts Station Rd., died Aug. 8. Mr. Gower was born in Flo rence, NC, and retired as a yard conductor from Norfolk & Western Railroad after 38 years of service. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Chesapeake and was a former chairman of Deacons. He was also a former Sunday School teacher of 12- to 13-year old boys. Survivors include: his wife, Bertha Sanders Gower; two daughters, Meri Beth Gower Griffin and husband, T. Brent Griffin Edenton, and Melanie Gower Woolard and husband, William Ted Woolard, of Chesa peake, Va; two sons, Leonard M. Gower Jr. of Washington, DC and Stanley W. Gower and wife, Rochelle. K. Mrs. Holmes was born in Edgecombe County, NC. A daughter of the late Robert Royal and Mrs. Lillian Insley Copeland, she was a retired teacher and speech therapist in the public school system. NIXON BUFFALO JUNCTION, VA - Mr. ElwoodLee Nixon, 51, hus band of Ann Webb Nixon, died Saturday night, Aug. 7, at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC. Mr. Nixon was a native of Edenton and a graduate of John A. Holmes High School. He received his BS in Geology and Education from Campbell Uni versity and also completed his Masters degree in Education Administration with honors at Longwood College. He loved Scouting and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout as a youth. He chose to worship at Buf falo Baptist Church with his family, but he remained a mem ber of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Edenton. For the past several years he had taught school in North Carolina most recently he served as assistant principal and athletic director at Southern Middle School in Roxboro, NC. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Robin Webb Nixon of Roanoke; two sons, Elwood Lee “Woody” Nixon III of Roxboro, NC and William Dwight Nixon of Buf falo Junction; his mother, Edith Bond Nixon, and sister, Peggy Nixon Brooks, both of Edenton. Nixon of Rahway, NJ and Thomas Nixon of Irvington, NJ; seven grand children; and five great-grand children. O'NEILL Dorothy Weber O’Neill, 72, of the 300 block of Chinook Trail, Edenton, died July 27, in Chowan Hospital. Mrs. O’Neil was the daugh ter of the late Dorathea Padmore and Henry J. Weber. She was the wife of George O’Neil. Besides her husband, she is also survived by a son, Henry Tuttle of Danbury, CT. A graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 2, in the Longridge Union Cemetery in Stamford, CT. A memorial ser vice will be held at a later date at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Edenton. PRIVOTT Selma Jordan Privott, 81, of Tyner, NC died Tuesday, July 27. She was the daughter of the late Farrah Monds and James Jordan, and the wife of the late Wilbur J. Privott, Sr. Mrs. Privott was a member of the Center Hill Baptist Church where she served the Lord in many ministries. - Surviving are two daughters, Mary Nixon and her husband Billy of Tyner, and Pat Beasley and her husband George of Charlottesville, VA; and a son, Joseph Privott, Jr. and his wife Marjorie of St. Louis, MO. Also surviving are seven grandchil dren, Dan Privott, David Privott, Shannon Privott, Jan Vrhovac, Joe Beasley, Jona than Nixon, and Jim Nixon, and seven great-grandchildren, Jamie Privott, Rachel Privott, Laura Privott, Cameron Privott, Zach Vrhovac, Jordan Vrhovac, and Sarah Vrhovac. MELVATEGELER Melva Tegeler of Edenton, a homemaker and former co owner of Tegeler’s Department Store in Narrowsburg, NY, and a former resident of Narrowsburg, died Thursday, Aug. 5, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC. She was 71. The daughter of Fred H. and Evelyn Hommel Rasmussen, she was born May 5, 1928 in Callicoon, NY. She was mar ried to C. Fred Tegeler, who passed away in 1996.
