Kentraille Sanderlin, 17, whose mother is Vanessa S. Felton of Edenton, was among winners of contests designed to test the knowledge of 4-H’ers about specific subjects. Sanderlin won the senior elec tric competition with a presen tation about lamp rewiring. Sanderlin received a $100 sav ings bond from North Carolina Electric Cooperatives. i Xj. / p * VJ.viiiiu i j vji/u * *. » w i vjj yolunteer leaders and North Carolina Cooperative Exten sion agents attended 4-H Con gress. The 4-H. program is. con ducted by North Carolina Co operative Extension at North Carolina State and North Caro lina A&T State universities. More than 275,000 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of 25,000 adult and youth volunteers. Kentraille is a student at John A. Holmes High School and is in the eleventh grade. Locals attend HOBYseminar Samantha Hewitt (Columbia High School), Renee Perry (John A. Holmes High School), Hollon Skinner (Lawrence Academy), and Erica Sinkovic (Perquiman's County High School) recently attended the Eastern NC Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar. The event, sponsored by the Raleigh Jaycees, was held this summer at Meredith College, Raleigh. Actor Hugh O’Brian estab lished the HOBY seminar af ter a visit to Africa, where he was inspired byDr. Albert Schweitzer. “One of the things Schweitzer said to me was that the most important thing in education was to teach young people to think for themselves,” O’Brian said. “From that inspiration, and with the support of others who believe in youth and the American dream, I started HOBY to seek out, recognize and develop outstanding lead ership potential among our nation’s youth.” Karen Perry, first row, striped shirt, served as a page for the Governor's Press Office this summer. Perry participates in Page Program Page program gives students chance to be part of government Karen Elizabeth Perry, of Edenton, participated in the Governor’s Page Program for the week of July 26 - July 30. Perry spent a week gaining valuable life expe rience and providing sup port as a page for the Governor’s Press Office. The Governor’s page Pro gram provides students with an opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge of the roles and functions of state government. During their week of ser vice learning, pages have a chance to attend press con ferences, observe commis sion meetings, and partici pate in a discussion with Gov. Hunt on current events and issues. Pages serve the office to which they have been as signed by assisting with day to-day operations. Some of their responsibilities in clude delivering legislative bills, filing documents, as sisting in mass mailings, answering telephones, and delivering agency mes sages. The educational aspect of the page experience in cludes touring at least one of the following state gov ernment buildings each day: the Capitol, the Legislative Building, the Executive Mansion, the Supreme Court, the Museum of Art, the Museum of History, and the NC Correctional Insti tution for Women. “The page program is an excellent opportunity for students,” said Gov. Hunt. “It affords them an oppor tunity to observe first hand how our government agen cies operate by participat ing in the daily tasks of our offices.” Perry is a sophomore at John A. Holmes High School. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Perry. The one-week program is open to high school students between the ages of 15 and 18, who are in good academic standing at their schools. Application forms are available year-round, but appointments are made on a first-come-first-serve basis.
