Locals' polite driving skills draw praise Good morning again and another week has passed. It seems that as I get older time passes by very quickly. I re member those days gone by when waiting to be sixteen took forever! I think this aging pro cess should be eversed. Why is it that when young, married and bringing up children, we have the small home and the very modest income. By the time we have a bigger home, the kids are gone. The income is a bit better but aging may limit what we can do, even though we have the dollars to pay for what we thought we wanted to do when we were young! It's all very backwards. Thought I would share with you today some of my, pet peeves and I hope you will share some of them with me and our readers (I'll keep your name a secret if you so wish). • People who park in Handi capped spaces in parking lots and do not have proper handi capped identification plates or stickers: •People w’ho get into the 10 item checkout line at a super market with a basketful of items. • People who buy two items and then write a check holding up the entire line. • People who borrow and never return items and when they do the item is broken. • People who tell you “Your hair looks nice’’ when you are ■ obviously having a “bad hair day". Sounds as if I am having a negative day so I will now share a very posi tive obser vation. Drivers in North Carolina are the most polite drivers I have encountered. Both my husband and I have had to do behavior modification. We have been accustomed to Mas sachusetts. New York and New Hampshire drivers! That in it self should tell you from where I am coming. It was common practice to sit at a red light, left signal blinking and be pre pared td turn left as soon as the light turned green thereby beating the car in the oncom ing lane. No wonder insurance rates are so high up north. For us it is sheer pleasure to drive in this area; people stop their cars to let pedestrians cross the street. You would have been considered a target back north if you dared to do such a dangerous thing. My hats off to North Caro lina and Edenton drivers. Now for my apology to read ers who made the Mountain High Key Lime Pie. I made a Boo Boo! Please take the recipe (if you cut it out of the newspaper) and change the 1 cup key lime juice tp one half a cup. I thought that I had proof read the recipe 10 ways and Marge Soper back but.1 did make a mistake and I am very sorry. It is one of those errors that haunts every columnist for fear that it could happen. It did! For those of you who made the pie and found you had a disaster on your hands I will be more than happy to reim burse you for the cost of the ingredients. Please drop me a note with your name, address and phone number and I will mail you a refund for the cost of ingredients. I only realized my error yes terday when I went to make two pies using the column rather than digging out the cookbook. I made the first one and somehow as I folded in the stiffened egg whites I knew something was wrong'. I pulled out the cookbook, checked the ingredients/ measurements and broke out in a cold sweat. OOPS! I was so unnerved that the second pie came out so-so, Again, my sincere apology. And now for some helpful hints: • Club soda will help remove the stain from red wine spilled bn clothing or carpet ing. It is the carbonated bubbles doing the work so the club soda cannot be flat and without bubbles! • Ketchup can be cleaned up using shaving cream and a sponge. Gently wipe up the excess, spray on the shaving cream, wait a few minutes and wipe up gently don't scrub. The process may need to be repeated, • A snug ring may be re moved by squirting liquid soap around the ring and turning the ring in circles around the finger towards the end of the finger. Remember this is for a snug-fitting ring. If it is tight fitting-, see a local jeweler. Many times they have a ring cutter. The ring, once cut off, can be enlarged. * Want big company” insurance for just you or your family9 You can — if you Choose Blue! In just a few months, we will enter a new millennium - the year 2000 (Y2K), There has been much publicity about potential computer problems. No one can be sure if computers will malfunction on January 1. 2000. or how these glitches may affect our finances. However, here are some do's and don'ts that will ease your transition into the millennium • Don't panic. Airplanes are not likely to fall out of the sky. and.meteors will not bombard the earth. • Do be aware of scams. Unscrupulous individuals are calling consumers, claiming to represent banks and credit card companies. Scamsters are convincing people to provide their account numbers under the guise that they are needed to fix a Y2K computer prob lem. Never give out personal information unless you placed the call and ydu know whom you are dealing with. • Don ’t withdraw alt your money from the bank. A bank failure is highly unlikely, and your account is federally insured up to $100,000 at most banks, thrifts, and credit unions. There is no such insurance for money in your desk drawer or home safe. • Do reconcile bank and brokerage accounts. You should save all bank, brokerage, and mutual fund statements for the last few months of 1999 and the first few months of 2000, and compare the reported transactions with your records. • Do review mortgage and credit card statements. During the early months of next year, you should verify that your mortgage payments are being credited to your account and that all purchases and payments are properly reflected on credit card statements. • Don’t assume that your computer is Y2K compliant. Even if your personal computer is just a few years old. verify with the manufacturer that it is Y2K compliant. You should do the same for your software. Most PC manufacturers and software vendors have toll-free numbers you can call. 1 SYKES V COMPANY, P.A. CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS/ ADVISORS TO BUSINESSES & INDIVIDUALS 101 W. These included a visit to Hatteras Island and Ocracoke, as well as a "Smart Talk" program presented by prison inmates at the Tyrrell County work farm, a day of fishing at Pettigrew State Park and experiencing the Alpine Towers challenge course in Manteo, NC. Raffle to be held at football game The Chowan County Go vernor’s One on One/4-H Friends of Youth Program combined learning and fun on several summer trips for youth and their mentors. The group is currently sponsoring a raffle to raise funds for future educa tional activities for the youth. The drawing for the winning tickets will be held at the John A. Holmes High School Home coming football game on Fri day, Oct. 22. The first drawing will be for a 13-inch symphonic color TV/ VCR and the second drawing prize will be $100 cash. Tickets are $1 each and are available from board mem bers, mentors and youth in the program. Tickets, as well as’ morfe information on the pro gram, can be obtained by con tacting Mildred Vanterpool, executive director of the pro gram, weekdays at 482-8431. Among the summer trips enjoyed by the youth so far was a first-time trip to Hatteras and Ocracoke Island. Arranged by mentor and board member Stella Brothers, this trip to the Outer Banks was especially memorable since the young people were able to witness the historic mo ving of the Hatteras Lighthouse as well as ride on the Ocracoke-Swan Quarter ferry in the middle of the storm. Another meaningful trip was to the Tyrrell County Work Farm where the youth partici pated in a program presented by the inmates entitled “Smart Talk." The focus of this pro gram was to have the youth hear real life stories from the inmates about how they got into trouble with the law and to discuss the type of attitudes and behaviors that landed the inmates in prison. They stressed to the youth the im portance of obedience to par ents, teachers and others in authority. This program was organized by Patti Cooper, sec retary to the superintendent of the unit, and Anthony Hathaway. Both are Gover nor’s One on One board mem bers. The youth also were treated to a day of fishing arranged by Stella Brothers at the Petti grew State Park. The park rangers taught the youth, sev eral of whom had never before beep fishing, the techniques that can be used when casting a rod. A fourth h ighligh t of the sum mer was an exciting trip to Manteo to visit the Alpine Tow ers, a challenge course spon sored by the Dare County Sheriff’s Department. The course teaches skills such as climbing high towers and walls while encouraging the group to learn to rely on and trust one another. 1 SAFETY ZONE Help make the world safe from 40 neuromuscular diseases. 1-800-572-1717 MMI Muscular Dystrophy Association www.mdausa.org Aces Football is ON THE AIR EDENTON VS PERQUIMANS H0MEC0MIN6 IS THIS FRIDAY!
