REGION /programs, people, events 3ZZ -- Chowan courthouse focus of exhibition ELIZABETH CITY - In May 1999 the Kluseum of the Albemarle opened its newest exhibit. “Restoring an Archi tectural Treasure: The Chowan County Courthouse. ” Throughout the next year, the museum will document the current restoration project for the 18th century courthouse. The extensive restoration ef fort began in early 1998. To complement the exhibit, the Museum of the Albemarle is sponsoring a practical, hands-on preservation work shop in conjunction with the North Carolina Historic Sites Section. Historic- Albemarle Tour. Inc. (HAT) and Preser vation North Carolina. Conducted by staff members from the State Historic Preser vation Office and other resto ration specialists, the work shop will feature demonstra tions and discussions about restoration project techniques and provide helpful hints. On Tuesday. Dec. 7, at 7 p.m., a program on “General Resto ration" will be taught by in structor Heather Fearnbach, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City. Reservations are required. Registration closes the Friday before the workshop. Guild Fair to be held this weekend WILLIAMSTON - The 18th annual Roanoke Arts & Crafts Guild Holiday Fair will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 13 14, at the Martin County Farmer’s Market located in Williamston. Ad mission is $1. with half the pro ceeds benefiting Relay for Life. Children under 6 will be ad mitted free. The fair will feature an ar ray of arts and crafts - every thing from basket weaving to woodworking. This is a per fect opportunity to do all your Christmas shopping under one roof, say event organizers. More than 40 artists and craftspeople will participate, with all handmade items avail able. Area authors will also par ticipate for the first time this year. And local non-profit groups such as the Martin County Historical Society, Friends of the Old Martin County Courthouse, the Mar tin County Genealogical Soci ety, Martin General Hospital and the Martin County Arts Council will be set up to pro vide information and sell unique items. Artists and craftsmen will donate one of their arts or crafts for a raffle. Raffle tick ets are $1, or six tickets for $5 with proceeds benefiting Re lay for Life. The guild fair is sponsored by the Roanoke Arts and Crafts Guild, the NC Cooperative Ex tension Service, and the Mar tin County Extension Home makers Association. Breakfast and lunch will be available from the Extension Homemak ers. The Roanoke Arts and Crafts Guild was organized in 1982. Hospice workshop is Nov. 13 AHOSKIE — University Health Systems Hospice Care will host its annual training workshop Saturday, Nov. 13, at 8:30 a.m. at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Anyone in terested in serving as a Hos pice volunteer is encouraged to enroll for this training. UHS Hospice care serves several counties in northeastern North Carolina, including Chowan County. "Volunteers play an impor tant role in the Hospice pro gram," explained Tra Perry, volunteer coordinator for UHS Hospice Care. "They are an important part of the Hospice care program. We appreciate all the hours volunteers pro vide to those in need and en courage others to consider pro viding this much-needed ser vice." "When you volunteer for Hospice, you gain the joy and satisfaction of making the world a better place," Perry added. "There are many ways that volunteers can help. If you have the time to send a card, pay a visit, or make a call, you could become a Hospice volun teer. We also need volunteers to provide help in the office or with special projects." Perry said that being a Hos pice volunteer is a rewarding and enriching experience with many positive outcomes and not a depressing experience.
