OBITUARIES /junerals, memorial services RAMONA A. SPRUILL CRESWELL. NC - Ramona Ambrose Spruill, 65, of 9500 Newland Rd., Creswell, died Nov. 7 at her home. A native of Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Pearl F. and Jordan Thomas'Ambrose, and the wife of Clyde Spruill. Jr. Mrs. Spruill was a home maker and a member of the Philippi Church of Christ. Besides her husband, survi vors include: a daughter, Bar bara Grissom of Carthage, NC: two sons, William Clyde Spruill III and wife Cindy, and Sandy J. Spruill and wife Carla, all of Creswell; a sister, Maxine Spring of Rocky Mount, NC; a brother, Roland Lee Ambrose of Creswell; and four grandchildren. Caroline, Jeffrey. Julia, and Thomas Spruill, all of Creswell: She was predeceased by two brothers. Sylvester Ambrose and Thomas J unior Ambrose. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10. at the Philippi Church of Christ, Creswell. with the Revs. David Sykes and David Watts officiating. Burial fol lowed in the church cemetery. Evans Funeral Home in Edenton was in charge of ar rangements. WILLIAM E. SPRUILL CAMARILLO. CA — Will iam Edward Spruill, fondly known as "Buster," went home to be with the Lord on Thurs day morning, Oct. 7. He was going about his regular morn ing routine. He had been sit ting in his favorite chair. He was 91 years old. Mr. Spruill was a longtime resident of California and a resident of Camarillo, CA since 1962. He was born in Edenton. NC and joined the Navy in 1925. He served ac t ively in the Navy for 30 years, and was an active member of the Camarillo Community Church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife. Anne Spruill, in 1997; his son, William E. Spruill, II in 1991; and a brother, Marvin Spruill in 1980. Mr. Spruill is survived by two sisters, Virginia Arnett of Suffolk, VA and Ethel Vann of Portsmouth, VA; two brothers, Gus Spruill of Virginia Beach, VA and A. Ray Spruill of Chesapeake, VA; a daughter, Barbara McCurdy; a daughter in-law, Rebecca Spruill Brightman; and grandchil dren, W. Daniel Spruill, Corrie Spruill, David Scott and Alan Scott; and three grandchil dren. Buster loved his country and was proud to have served it during World War II. He spent many hours sharing the ad ventures he experienced aboard mine sweepers in the Pacific arena. He was known for his faith-' ful church attendance. He was affectionately called "Grandpa" by many young people, and he loved it. A memorial service was held at the Charles Carroll Funeral Home in Ventura, CA on Sat urday, Oct. 16. V — I I I I I I I I I I I Taylor, Jr., died Nov. 1 at the Marion County Medical Cen ter. He was a native of Belhaven, NC and grew up in Edenton. Mr. Taylor was the son of the late Walter John and Lois Winslow Taylor, and the hus band of Margaret Faye Fuquay Taylor of Mullins, SC. He was a retired principal at the North Mullins Elementary School and served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea. Mr. Taylor was retired di rector of the Mullins School District, a life member of the NC Education Association and the National Eagle Scouts As sociation. He was a member of the Appalachian Trail Club and First Baptist Church in Mullins, SC. Besides his wife, survivors include: two sisters, Patsy A. Taylor of Edenton and Catherine T. Townson~l>f Murfreesboro, NC. A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton with Dr. Paul Pridgen officiating. Evans Funeral Home in Edenton was in charge of ar rangements. ROBERT L. TWINE Robert Lee Twine, 74, of the 1200 block of Mohave Trail, Edenton, died Tuesday. Nov. 2, in Albemarle Hospital, Eliza beth City, NC. He was a retired welder, a member of Bandon Chapel, and the Chowan Ruritans. Mr. Twine was the son of the late Jim and Pearly Twine. He is survived by his wife, Doris Bradshaw Twine; a daughter, Patricia Sierawski of Moscow Mills, See OBITS On Page 10-A Capt. David Green dies in Elizabeth City Nov. 7 HERTFORD, NC Capt. David Hepburn Green, USN (Ret.), of Rt. 1, Box 840, Hertford, died Sunday morn ing, Nov. 7, in Albemarle Hospi tal, Elizabeth City, NC. He was born Aug. 19, 1920 in Washington, DC while his father was stationed at the Naval Proving Grounds in Dahlgren, VA. Growing up involved moving to places where his father served. He was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same dis trict in Wisconsin from whence his dad, Capt. B.H. Green, USNA '05, had been appointed. Graduating into World War II, he went almost im mediately into the Subma rine Service in the good ship Albacore (SS218). Next was back to new construction and three more war patrols in PARCHE (SS384). As the war ended, tours followed in Skipjack, Cusk, Catfish, and finally shore duty at Fleet Sonar School, San Di ego, in the Pro-Sub Section. Then it was back to sea in Diodon (SS349) and a war patrol in the Korean waters, a tour on ComSub Pac Staff and then CO Requin (SS481). After that came three years at the Pentagon followed by a split-tour on a CarDiv. Staff and CO Charles P. Cecil (DDR835), War College in Newport, one year as a student and two as^ faculty. CO Waccamaw (AO109) and first E. Wartime retirement meant a year at Com 3 which ended March 1965. Civilian life came early . with eight / years at Columbia University in their building program and a year as business manager in a public school system. Then, it was back to sea as master of an AEC research vessel out of UPR in Mayaguez, PR. Three years found him back in the college building business un til final retirement and farm ing in 1981. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Rutter Green; three daughters, Nancy Meshnick of Mon tague, NJ, Sharman Bartram of Sharon, CT and Holly Gowdy of Walpole, NH; a son, David H. Green, Jr. of Walpole, MA; two sisters, Natalie Canby of Leeds, MA and Barbara Bowen of Southbury, CT; and .seven grandchildren. A memorial mass was cel ebrated Thursday morning, Nov. Il,at9a.m. in St. Anne's Catholic Church, Edenton, with Father Roch T. Drozdzik as Celebrant. Interment fol lowed in St. Bernard’s Catho lic Church Cemetery, Sharon, CT.
