For Professional Services In our area SEE THE “Service Directory” in THE CLASSIFIEDS Canadian hunting won’t soon be forgotten I experienced my first Alberta hunt last year and saw the largest whitetail deer that I’d ever seen. I was bow hunting and couldn’t quite get in close enough to get a shot. The deer was later killed by a Canadian gun hunter and scored a whopping 192 B&C.. This experience was a powerful lure to me for returning to hunt in Alberta this year. My guide in ’98 was the noted Floyd McKeever from Fort Assiniboine, the second oldest fort in Canada and home to some of the finest whitetail deer hunting in Alberta. McKeever was distressed because I didn’t bag my deer with a bow last year and very kindly in vited me back this year to hunt un der his wife Chrystal’s C-license. My first few days hunting were on the edge of an immense alfalfa field that had never received its sec ond cutting for hay. McKeever had observed many deer (and moose) feeding in the field before my visit and had already picked out the spot for my stand. The field was bor dered on one side by a Provincial Park, on another side by a stream and beaver dams and woodlands on three sides. Deer sign and trails were everywhere. It looked good for the hunt. What McKeever had not figured on was wol ves. My last year’s hunt had been in terrupted by. timber wolves and so was this year’s hunt. To quote Floyd Me- . K e e v e r , “When the wolves move in, the deer move out.” If I’d ever doubted the abilities of the 7mm-08 I lost them one morn ing. About 30 minutes after legal shooting hours opened a buck stepped out of the woods about 125 yards down the cut-line and stopped to see who (or what) was standing to his north. That pause gave me enough time to throw up my bin oculars and take a good look at the headgear lie was wearing. I easily counted ten points, the antlers were outside the ears and the size of the buck was huge (we later estimated the deer’s weight at over 300 pounds). I double-checked to be sure that the deer was a white tail (mule deer are also present here and my license was for white tail only), threw up the rifle and shot. ACC (fh MOTOROLA Visit us today at Wireless Southgate Mall Elizabeth City The deer immediately dropped, briefly attempted to rise and then disappeared into the low grass. When I went to look I found him about 20 feet into the woods and quite dead. I’d just taken my first Alberta deer. Chrystal McKeever was abso lutely ecstatic about my kill too. Evidently this was her first kill by a hunter that she was guiding. Istillhadaweektohuntin Alberta and my deer hunting was over be cause my deertagwas filled. Ididn’t want to stop hunting so I purchased a wolf/coyote license ($10.00 Cana dian) that allows a hunter to take unlimited numbers of timber wolves and coyotes. The Canadians hate these animals and think that we “Yanks” are “crazy as Hell for introducing wolves in our woods.” I know for a fact that wolves will wreck deer hunting and wonder myself about the wisdom of intro ducing these predators in North Carolina. It’ll be at least three years before I can take advantage of the class C license again so I can only dream about hunting in Alberta for a few years. One thingyou can be sure of, though, I’ll be back. ¥1 gMlYlWv 11111 1 11 'fiUls i 1111 iJil»J 1\1 k luu PLUS YOU KEEP ALL REBATES!!!
